About the Author
Bob McCune is an iOS developer and instructor from Minnesota. He started developing for the Mac in 2007 and then switched to iOS when the first iPhone SDK was released in 2008. He is the owner of TapHarmonic, LLC, a small iOS consulting and training company based out of MN. Bob also founded the MN chapter of CocoaHeads in the spring of 2008 and remains the group leader to this day. Bob and his wife, Linda, have two amazing children who are who are growing up faster than he would like. He is incredibly blessed to have such a loving and supportive family.

Great book!

I've been developing with QuickTime since about 2000, and we have quite a history together. So you can imagine my surprise when the AV Foundation framework was introduced for iOS 4 at WWDC in 2010. It was a modern 64-bit media framework that seemed to do a lot of what we were using QuickTime for. Hmmm... It was much less of a surprise when AV Foundation was bought "back to the Mac" in Lion (OS X v10.7), and it was no surprise at all when the QuickTime and QTKit frameworks were deprecated in Mavericks (OS X v10.9) in favor of AV Foundation.
This is the modern way with Cocoa: a framework developed for one platform becomes available for both iOS and OS X, and having become familiar with its classes and methods on one platform you're in good shape to use it everywhere. "Learning AV Foundation" admirably reflects the modern way, with sample apps for both platforms and discussion of differences where they exist.
Since I'm keen to leave QuickTime behind, I dove right in. I really wish there were more technical books like this. Stylistically it reminds me of Aaron Hillegass' "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X" except focused on the vast AV Foundation framework and its entourage (AVKit, Core Media, Core Audio, Core Video, Core Animation).
We start off with a bit of the history I mentioned above to put the framework into perspective, and some essential background theory about audio sampling, video codecs and container formats. But it isn't long before we're looking at some code. Like Hillegass' books the code is always presented in the context of solving a problem or creating an app, which is much more approachable than dry out-of-context code samples from the API Reference or StackOverflow. And of course each chapter ends with a Challenge to encourage you to put what you've learned into practice as soon as possible.
Just before starting with this book I wanted to add a new feature to one of our apps: saving out thumbnail images from .mov files. I already knew how to do this using QTKit and needed to "translate" my code for AV Foundation. Reading Apple's APIs pointed me to the right class, but the docs are primarily focussed on describing each of the methods. A quick search of "Learning AV Foundation" for the AVAssetImageGenerator class struck gold, with a clear description of the steps and a code sample that showed me exactly what to do. It literally saved me hours.
In the first section the framework's classes are covered in a logical progression of chapters, from the audio classes, to assets and metadata classes, to video classes, and the simplified AVKit classes. Metadata is a particular interest of mine and has a reputation for being an especially dry subject, but it's covered exceptionally well (meaning too much detail for most but plenty of substance for someone like me!). Each chapter contains at least one sample app with code listings and cover relevant concepts (such as CMTime/CMTimeRange and Movie Modernization) in context as they're needed.
The second section on Media Capture covers the input and output classes, and even face detection and bar code/QR code detection (had no idea AV Foundation could do that!). Each chapter builds a sample app using the appropriate classes, and provides the code samples as you'd expect.
By the time you get to the last section on Media Creation and Editing you know exactly what to expect. These chapters work towards building a cuts-only video editing application that composites video and audio, and plays back and exports the composition. This app subsequently grows through later chapters to include audio mixing (volume changes, fades and ducking); video transitions (dissolves, pushes, wipes); and animated images and title overlays using Core Animation. Really comprehensive!
I've been watching WWDC developer videos and reading the API docs on AV Foundation since it was first introduced, but I was surprised at how much I learned from this book. It'd be a great resource for iOS developers wanting to add video, audio or camera support to their app, or for someone like me ready to move on from QuickTime.

Good intro pre WWDC 2014

It's clear and well written. Excellent intros on video file formats and fundamental points you need to understand in that space.
Sadly has absolutely nothing about AVAudioEngine. (though he is currently doing some lectures on it...). For the pre WWDC 2014 AV Foundation, this is great. But don't expect depth of coverage for anything new in OS X 10.10 or iOS 8.0

Essential guide for low-level AV capture and manipulation.

Widely known as *the* independent expert on AV Foundation, Bob McCune's book on this tricky framework is an indispensable aid for those working with low-level audiovisual elements in Cocoa or CocoaTouch.
There are several easy ways to perform the basics of image, video, and audio capture and playback. If that is the limits of your use-cases, you don't need this book. But if, for instance, you want to do perform realtime analysis on AV inputs, edit video or mix audio, or perform advanced compositing, this book will save you from dozens of crashes and lost hours.
It's not a book that belongs on every developer's bookshelf, but for people who have to understand low-level AV manipulation, it deserves the 5 stars.
