Diving and Spearfishing in South Africa by Piet Van Rooyen is the second edition of the book which was the definitive guide when it was first published in 1988. Updated and more complete, this edition has full color photos of many of the fish and fishermen and women. This edition very importantly stresses the practices needed for sustainability of sport fishing in South Africa, where the Atlantic Ocean on the west coast has icy cold temperatures and the Indian ocean on the east coast is temperate, thus providing the visitor and sea sports enthusiasts the largest arrays of marine species. An expert himself, Rooyen details everything from equipment, techniques, training, safety, boat handling, hazards, emergencies, attacks, restrictions, protective methods, as well as how to dive and how to spearfish. The book is interesting to peruse even if you never intend to participate in the sport...I gained a huge appreciation for all that goes into any marine endeavor, whether as sport or as a job.

About the Author
Dr. PIET VAN ROOYEN is professor of Political and Administrative Studies at the University of Namibia in Windhoek. He has a PhD in Development Studies and additional qualifications in Nature Conservation and Conservation Planning. An avid diver, he captains the national Namibian spearfishing team and contributes regularly to local and international travel and diving journals and magazines. His list of academic publications in extensive and he has won several awards for his literary works.

Another Winner for the Dynamics AX community

Being a 25+ year manufacturing professional and an 8+ year Dynamics AX professional, I have seen the evolution of this product. Scott Hamilton is, if not the foremost authority, certainly one of the foremost authorities in the Dynamics AX community. I have all his books and consider them among the most valuable of all of my resources. His books are well written, accurate, and entertaining. What sets him apart is that he has the real life experience to paint the visual picture with actual scenarios that he has participated in. Whether you are just starting in a new area of knowledge or expanding and existing one Scotts books are valuable.

In short, if I am trying to get up to speed on a new discipline or honing my skills, I look to see if Scott has written anything on the subject matter.

"Food Products Manufacturing using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012" is no exception. In a time where we are scrambling to obtain the necessary knowledge to effectively implement this exciting new product, this book gives us important information that does not currently exist anywhere else. My personal experience in manufacturing has been mostly discrete manufacturing. About the Author
Jonathan Whelan is a Business Architect who has over 25 years' experience in a variety of roles within leading organizations. A broad spectrum of businesses has benefited from his observations and a number of his insights have led to significant programmes of work. Jonathan is also the author of several published books and has contributed to professional, trade and press publications. As well as having considerable practical experience, Jonathan is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the British Computer Society. Graham Meaden has been a practising Enterprise Architect, as a consultant and member of staff, in the Banking, Insurance, Government, Transportation and Energy industry sectors. In recent years he has focussed on Business Architecture and setting up architecture practices. Clear and concise written book

It did give me some additional insight about how the models hang together and the explanation about capability was spot on. The book gives you help but you need to have considerable understanding of the subject matter. I would not recommend to absolute beginners but recommend it for people with some basic or advanced understanding,

Excellent overview of BA for established professionals and executives

This is one of my best go-to book for the year 2013-14, specially the lucid and clear style of writing, the presentation of the subjects, and scope of this fast developing area. As an IT professional with a background in business administration, I always felt the existence of big gap and friction between the business and technology strategies in enterprises (big and small). With the relatively recent formalization of the knowledge areas of Enterprise Architecture and now Business architecture, that parallel and quite distinct lifelines of business and technology have finally started to merge. And this book goes a long way in formulating the co-existence, and harmony of the two distinct areas, starting with design thinking for business.

I have already read it a couple of times, though each time I read it, there are new insights that I discover. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Technology strategy, Enterprise architecture, and of course everyone in the Business architecture field. Hope every CIO has a copy of this excellent book, even though there are lots of areas that still need to be explored, but as the authors mention, we are still in Business Architecture 1.0 level.

This set of three manuals is invaluable in the lab. Complete with almost every technique commonly used, and full useful tables and other data sets that save the user a lot of time. One key point though, is that a new edition is long overdue.

This book is no longer the most up to date lab manual but it has the recipes and step by step instructions. the newer updated version seems more text book rather than recipe book. I am so glad I snagged this edition. they are becoming increasingly hard to find and I wouldn't be without it

About the Author
David A. Freedman (1938-2008) was Professor of Statistics at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a distinguished mathematical statistician whose theoretical research included the analysis of martingale inequalities, Markov processes, de Finetti's theorem, consistency of Bayes estimators, sampling, the bootstrap, and procedures for testing and evaluating models of methods for causal inference. Freedman published widely on the application - and misapplication - of statistics in works within a variety of social sciences, including epidemiology, demography, political science, public policy, and law. He emphasized exposing and checking the assumptions that underlie standard methods, as well as understanding how those methods behave when the assumptions are false - for example, how regression models behave when fitted to data from randomized experiments. He had a remarkable talent for integrating carefully honed statistical arguments with compelling empirical applications and illustrations. Freedman was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2003 he received the National Academy of Science's John J. Carty Award, for his 'profound contributions to the theory and practice of statistics'.

David Collier is Robson Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current work focuses on conceptualization and measurement and on causal inference in qualitative and multi-method research. He is co-author of Rethinking Social Inquiry: Diverse Tools, Shared Standards and co-editor of two recent volumes: The Oxford Handbook of Political Methodology and Concepts and Method in Social Science. A central concern of his research is with the contribution of detailed case knowledge to causal inference and concept formation.

Jasjeet S. Sekhon is Associate Professor of Political Science at University of California, Berkeley. His current research focuses on methods for causal inference in observational and experimental studies and evaluating social science, public health, and medical interventions. Professor Sekhon has done research on elections, voting behavior, and public opinion in the United States; multivariate matching methods for causal inference; machine learning algorithms for irregular optimization problems; robust estimators with bounded influence functions; health economic cost effectiveness analysis; and the philosophy and history of inference and statistics in the social sciences.

Philip B. Stark is Professor of Statistics at University of California, Berkeley. His research centers on inference problems, focusing on quantifying the uncertainty in inferences that rely on numerical models of complex physical systems. Professor Stark has done research on the Big Bang, causal inference, the US census, chemical spectroscopy, earthquake prediction, election auditing, food web models, the geomagnetic field, geriatric hearing loss, information retrieval, Internet content filters, nonparametrics, the seismic structure of the Earth and Sun, and spectrum estimation. He has served as an expert witness on statistics for government and industry in state and federal courts.

A good collection of articles by the author.

This is not a textbook. Rather it is a collection of articles written by the author and his collaborators. Some articles are more interesting than others. Some are more difficult to read as they required certain background for the issues that the author was trying to address. Overall, it is a good book and a great reminder that there are lots of assumptions made in statistics. You need to revisit all these assumptions on every problem you encounter. Don't just believe what newspaper headlines say.

This is how to do statistical analysis

I am not familiar with all the authors, but this book has Freedman's finger prints all over it.

In the book, many of our known social problems are reviewed and discussed with a deeper statistical view than earlier writers on the topics. For example, the evidence that the outbreak of the Guillaume Barre syndrome was strongly related to vaccines is shown to be weaker than many have believed.

For many scientists, this book will be very interesting.

Understanding novel writing

Jeremy Hawthorn is a renowned author on the subject of novel writing. This book is an excellent text book for anyone who is studying novels, aspiring to be a writer or is writing their own novel. It provides the fundamental elements needed to understand how novels are written in plain easy to follow language. I was so impressed by this book I have added to my personal collection.

In this book Jeremy breaks down the writing fundamentals into categories, styles and structural techniques. He provides the background of writing without having the reader fall asleep reading. His description on analysis is pure and is quoted by many universities around the world. After completing this book, writing and reading novels becomes clearer, and more enjoyable.

I can truly recommend this book, one that will be well read and referenced for many years.

About the Author
Stuart Murray spent 12 years as an urban church planter in Tower Hamlets (East London) and has continued to be involved in church planting since then as a trainer, mentor, writer, strategist, and consultant.
For nine years he was Oasis Director of Church Planting and Evangelism at Spurgeon's College, London; he continues as an associate lecturer at the college.
He is chair of the Anabaptist Network and has a Ph.D. in Anabaptist hermeneutics. Since September 2001, Stuart has worked under the auspices of the Anabaptist Network as a trainer and consultant, with particular interest in urban mission, church planting, and emerging forms of church.
Stuart is the founder of Urban Expression, a pioneering urban church-planting agency with teams in London, Glasgow, Manchester, and the Netherlands.

Non-Constantinian Followers of the Way

In fulfillment of the promise of the subtitle, the author outlines seven core convictions of Anabaptism as it exists today:
1. Jesus is example, teacher, friend, redeemer and Lord.
2. Jesus is the focal point of God's revelation.
3. Western culture is slowly emerging from Christendom.
4. The frequent association of the church with status, wealth, and
force is inappropriate for and damages the witness of followers of Jesus.
5. Churches are called to be committed communities of discipleship and
mission.
6. Spirituality and economics are interconnected. Anabaptists are committed
to finding ways of living simply, sharing generously, caring for
creation, and working for justice.
7. Peace is at the heart of the gospel. Anabaptists are committed to finding
nonviolent alternatives and to learning to make peace between
individuals, within and among churches, in society, and between nations.

Subsequent chapters elaborate on these convictions.

Murray names the big three among traditional Anabaptists: Mennonites, Amish, and Hutterites. (He fails to elaborate on the diversity among Mennonites.) Non-traditional Anabaptists include neo-Anabaptists--Christians who identify with Anabaptist tradition but have no historic links to any Anabaptist-related denomination--and hyphenated Anabaptists--Christians who find inspiration in the Anabaptist tradition but do not identify themselves as Anabaptist. Examples could include Baptist-Anabaptists, Methodist-Anabaptist and various other Denomination-Anabaptist varieties. The distinction between hyphenated and neo-Anabaptists is somewhat strained. For example, if I am an active, participating Methodist with Anabaptist convictions, am I neo or hyphenated?

A recurring theme of this book is the end of Constantinian Christianity. Murray not only acknowledges, but celebrates the demise of Christendom.

This is a helpful book for understanding Anabaptism. It provides a historical overview of the movement that can serve as a refresher course for many of us who have become a bit rusty in our church history, and as an introduction to those who have no previous knowledge of the radical reformation. The author paints the origins of Anabaptism warts and all. Radical reformers and their spiritual heirs are usually thought of as pacifists, but some among early Anabaptists resorted to violence, i.e, the instigators of the Peasants Revolt. While the historical section of this book is no more than a sketch, hopefully it will pique the interest of some to dig deeper into the witness of this important part of the Christian family.

Doesn't do what it says

"Naked Anabaptist purports to describe an "Anabaptism" "stripped down to its bare essentials" for people who may have heard about it and want to know more about it, perhaps a Christian seeker who is disenchanted with their own religious background and is drawn to something they have heard about Anabaptism. The "naked" in the title apparently means (according to a blurb on back) an Anabaptism stripped of Mennonite, Amish, and Hutterite traditions.

But Murray immediately reveals that this is not really what he is trying to do: "these convictions are an attempt by Anabaptists in Britain and Ireland today to learn from the Anabaptist tradition.... (p. 44)" In that case, two things follow. Firstly, this is not "naked Anabaptism". It is Anabaptism read by particular people in a particular social and cultural location. After stripping away Mennonite, etc., traditions, but they have simply put another tradition it its place: the tradition of a certain variety of evangelical radicalism, consciously trying to move beyond what it interprets as a failed and dying Christendom.

The second problem is that Murray then presents these "core convictions" as if they are the content of coherent theological perspective, like say Five Points Calvinism or Thomism. Although he was initially honest about "where he was coming from," for the rest of the book he completely ignores the origins of his agenda. He pretends he is giving us an interpretation of Anabaptism.

But his real agenda is stated in the subtitle: "The Bare Essentials of a Radical Faith." So the the book is the inverse of what Murray claims to provide. He does not strip Anabaptism down to its core and find "a radical faith." Rather he takes his radical faith, and DRESSES IT UP as Anabaptism.

This is most clearly seen in his interpretation of Peace & Justice: he criticizes the "nonresistance" of traditional Mennonite practice (p. 130), instead preferring contemporary "peace" initiatives, like the Christian Peacemaker Teams. He later criticizes Mennonite separatism (p. 164), although he knows it is "endorsed by foundational documents like the 'Schleitheim Confession'." But that confession does far more than endorse separatism. *It makes separatism the basis of the rejection of violence.*:

Let's quote from the Confession: "everything which is not united with our God and Christ cannot be other than an abomination which we should shun and flee from. By this is meant all Catholic and Protestant works and church services, meetings and church attendance, drinking houses, civic affairs, the oaths sworn in unbelief and other things of that kind, which are highly regarded by the world and yet are carried on in flat contradiction to the command of God, in accordance with all the unrighteousness which is in the world. From all these things we shall be separated and have no part with them for they are nothing but an abomination, and they are the cause of our being hated before our Christ Jesus, Who has set us free from the slavery of the flesh and fitted us for the service of God through the Spirit Whom He has given us.
Therefore there will also unquestionably fall from us the unchristian, devilish weapons of force - such as sword, armor and the like, and all their use (either) for friends or against one's enemies"

Notice: rejection of violence FLOWS FROM separation from the world. In other words, for historic Anabaptists and Anabaptism, if one wants to be nonviolent, one must be separated from the world. But Murray doesn't want that sort of nonviolence: he wants worldly peace and justice, not the peace that is created in a separated community guided by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As noted by another reviewer, another example is Murray's rejection of patriarchy. But patriarchy is essential to traditional Mennonite practice. So why does Murray prefer egalitarianism? Because it fits his contemporary "radical" sensibilities better. He provides no argument that egalitarianism is either more biblical or more "Anabaptist".

I kept looking for a theological *argument*: what is Anabaptism? How does it compare to other confessional traditions? How does Murray know that *this* version of Anabaptism is its core (as distinct from other possible interpretations)? Why is it theologically or ethically more desirable than other confessional traditions? Murray, unfortunately, only gave his personal opinions, which for me, made this a tedious book to read. However, if you agree with the radical agenda, then you will probably like the book.

But if you are looking for an explanation of historical Anabaptism, or a careful discussion of how and to what degree the values of Anabaptism can be appropriated by modern Christians, I would encourage you to go elsewhere. For the history and theology of the original Anabaptists, try The Anabaptist Story: An Introduction to Sixteenth-Century Anabaptism. Then perhaps go to the classic of H. S. Bender, Anabaptist Vision in which Bender attempts to interpret Anabaptism within the framework of the evangelicalism of the '20s and '30s. I also suggest that you search for "conservative Anabaptism" and check out some of the links. (last two paragraphs modestly edited)

The Naked Anabaptist

The book The Naked Anabaptist, was recommended by a friend and Christian minister when I lamented feeling pretty much alone in my beliefs about the sin of war and the materialism that so dominates the American psyche in these modern times. Stuart Murray shockingly uses the term "post Christendom" and then proceeds to show that the new Christian is finding new truths in Jesus' "sermon on the mount". That, simply believing, is WAY different than actually following the example of unconditional love and peace/justice as demonstrated when He walked and spoke while on Earth. Sometimes the book's a little deep in theology but there's no law that prevents me from skipping pages to find the more understandable parts and then going back. I think the author is right on target with this book and it turns out I'm far from being alone. Thank you Amazon for making it available.

Hero steals the scenes in this sweet tale

I was delighted with Cathy Maxwell's new tale The Marriage Ring, largely because the hero is so unexpected. He is really the star of this novel.

Richard Lynsted is upright, moral and a wee bit judgmental and even at age twenty-nine he longs for his father's approval. He believes he can earn it when he tries to thwart a blackmail attempt against his father and uncle. Problem is the blackmailer is a beautiful Scot who is outspoken and angry.

Grace MacEachin is also trying to win her father's approval. Her sire was convicted of embezzling money from an elderly lady and sent away to a penal colony for years. During her father's absence everything fell apart for Grace, she left her Inverness home for London and is now an actress. She believes in her father's innocence and is convinced that Richard's father and uncle were the real culprits, so she sends them a note demanding money or she will tell the magistrates that they were involved with the embezzlement.

Richard is a fair minded person and after meeting Grace, is willing to hear her side of the story and he is ready to meet her father too. This necessitates a trip to Scotland and it is on this journey that Richard and Grace really discover each other.

Both leads are distrustful and longing for parental approval and yet both have lived their lives very differently. Grace is defiant and her past is less than perfect. Richard is a model citizen but he is missing joy and companionship. During their long journey to Scotland they take stock of their lives and really grow into a loving couple. Grace just seems to mature, she realizes she has been headstrong and her escape to London was not ever going to solve her problems.

Richard is so good and honorable it is almost impossible not to like him. Yes, he is a bit reserved but he is also incredibly kind hearted, brave and heartbreakingly vulnerable too. His metamorphosis from stern unbending barrister to open hearted, loving hero is wonderful.

There are a few sections of this novel that get bogged down a little and Grace is a little too forward but hero Richard more than makes up for these little problems. The dialogue is also good (these two speak to each other with respect and affection). This is a definite recommend.

Good overall, wanted an epilogue

I really wanted to give this book a five star rating, but the end of the book held me back. That's not to say the end of the book was bad (it wasn't) but I was hoping for more. The characters are refreshing and, even though they come to love each other in such a short period of time, the reader can appreciate what they go through together. I wanted this book to keep going and, as I approched the end, I knew it would be wrapped up too quickly. I would have really loved an epilogue...a letter from Grace to her friend Fiona (from Seduction at Christmas) telling of her marriage, or a look ahead to Grace's and Richard's married years...something that would have given me that extra satisfaction at the end of the story.

Other than that, a solid romance and definitely one I will re-read.

The Honorable Richard Lynsted knows exactly the kind of woman he wants to marry: one who is well-bred, reserved, genteel, and most definitely not a Scottish actress intent on blackmailing his father. In other words, his future wife will be the exact opposite of Grace MacEachin. The "Scottish Songbird" may have all of London dangling after her charms, but Richard refuses to be swayed by Miss MacEachin's looks when he listens to her ridiculous story about his father and uncle ruining her father's life. To prove her wrong, Richard agrees to accompany Grace to Scotland where he will hear what her father has to say. It should have been a simple trip...

Grace doesn't trust any man, but she is relieved when Richard Lynsted agrees to hear her father's story. She's just one coach ride away from being reunited with her father and putting her past behind her. Too bad that one coach ride is a long one, made interminable by the priggish man accompanying her.

But Richard isn't as stuffy as he seems. And Grace is more than just a beautiful woman. And someone doesn't want them to make it to Scotland alive. With danger bringing two seemingly opposite people together, will Richard and Grace learn that they do, in fact, have more in common than they first believed? Or will new fears and past hurts keep this newfound couple from taking their blossoming romance all the way to the altar?

Get ready for one of the sweetest, most charming romances of the year with The Marriage Ring. Ever since Cathy Maxwell introduced the indomitable Grace MacEachin in In the Highlander's Bed I've been waiting for Grace's story. To my great pleasure, The Marriage Ring was everything I could hope for. Grace is still the strong, caring beauty I first grew attached to and she meets her match in Richard. Richard may be a big bear of a man, but he's got a soft heart. Both he and Grace share a common yearning for approval and what I adored about their story was the two of them learning what really mattered in life and finding the acceptance they so sought where they least expected it - from one another.

The Marriage Ring is the third book in Ms. Maxwell's Scandals and Seductions series but it stands all on its own. Fans of Ms. Maxwell's will likely delight, as I did, in the brief references to Nick (Richard's cousin) and Fiona (Grace's friend), who fell in love in the first Scandals and Seductions story, A Seduction at Christmas. I finished The Marriage Ring utterly contented with Grace and Richard's romance. It was fast-paced, entertaining, and at times absolutely melted my heart. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Maxwell has in store for readers in her next sure-to-be-fabulous book!
