I feel like Skin could have been developed with more detail and ...

Skin was a very interesting story, but at only 102 pages it left me wanting more. I feel like Skin could have been developed with more detail and even some more back story into a full on 200-300 page novel. Even though it was short, the writing made the story come alive. You could actually feel the fear and the horror coming through.

It became clear while reading that the author was trying to target a specific audience – young readers that are still struggling with getting through longer books. Yet and still, I find that the story and writing were interesting and appealing enough to make me want to read the other stories in the series.

An icky but creepy read

Another creeptastic installment in the Night Fall series from Darby Creek. If the cover doesn't skeeve you out, then the contents surely will. And it'll have you looking at your own emerging zits in a whole new, and terrifying, light.

If you didn't know, the Night Fall series is a YA series written specifically for the reluctant or slower reader that might not be able (or willing) to take on the bigger, heavier (not necessarily physically) tomes otherwise seen in YA. While the read is quick, it's effective. The writing's simple yet it portrays the horror the story is trying to get across. While it may be lacking in detail, the simplicity that it does provide is enough to make you question leaving the light on at night, proving that effective horror doesn't have to be a labyrinthine door stopper.

But just like the last Night Fall book I reviewed, Unthinkable, I wanted more from the story. As someone that certainly is not a reluctant reader, I wanted more depth than the story offered. The reasoning in this story is insane and oh so freakishly demented. God, I wanted more. I was craving details that I couldn't get. I wanted to feel more for Nick although I felt plenty for him already. I wanted a little more sense of his invisibleness although it was pretty evident considering those that helped him out were not his peers but adults.

Really, the only bad thing about this book was that there wasn't enough. I wanted more! More history! More Nick! More freaky ass skin issues! What was there had me freaked right the hell out. I can only imagine how creepy it would be if there was more fat to the story. I'm guessing I'd rightly lose sleep if there were any more to it because it had me cringing as it were. And it has me yearning for even more horror to come to the surface in the YA market.

If you know someone that's a reluctant reader and want to break them into the awesome that is books, the Night Fall series is a really good place to start, especially if they enjoy getting freaked out. Skin was just as good, if not better, than Unthinkable. I actually think I was a little more scared this time around. And I loved it.

A starting point, no revolutionary advice

Amazon was giving this book away, and I need a vacation, so I downloaded it. It's a quick read. Although it's about 77 pages you could read every word in about an hour. If you're new to travel hacking, or have never heard of travel hacking, this is as good a starting point as any. I'm not going to say that the information given is common sense, because a lot of people don't know much about anything, but the whole 77 page book basically boils down to one concept: sign up for rewards credit cards.

I suppose one could call that a "travel hack," but I would prefer to think of it as a starting point. Basically everyone that wants to travel for free should begin by picking a destination, a carrier and signing up for their rewards card for the free miles. I was hoping for some advice on racking up miles AFTER getting the initial boost, or some super secret method of meeting the minimum spending requirements, or at least a script for getting out of paying yearly fees. Each of those tips are reduced to one or two paragraphs that basically give you a concept but no real direction.

I would love to see some content added covering topics like miles runs, status bumps, obtaining free upgrades, or maximizing miles from spending. Otherwise this is just a really long tutorial about getting a bunch of credit cards.

Sorry, but this book is too basic to provide much value.

Okay, here's my synopsis: It's fluff. Sorry to say, but it's geared toward absolute beginners, likely people in their early 20's who might have never seen a credit card before. The message of the e-book: "You can sign up for CC's and earn points and fly to anywhere you've ever dreamed!" The author says that he's only been doing this for 2 years. The book is filled with testimonials from other travel hackers that contain their Twitter accounts for you to contact them. Nobody shares anything really worthwhile to help you understand the game. The author himself says that he's never done tried any advanced points generation techniques, but shares some links to some blog entries (one of which was is already dead at the time of the book's release).

The "valuable" minimum spend tips:
- Make your mom an authorized user, ask her to spend like normal on your CC, then give you a check.
- Go to restaurants with friends. Have them pay you back in cash
- If necessary, eat the cost of paying your bills with a credit card. "It's worth it, seriously!"

The book doesn't provide enough useful suggestions about particular cards to look out for. Instead, it's more about setting your goals beforehand and then carefully deciding on cards. The book provides a decent enough job of warning people not to overspend and how to not destroy your credit, but I feel like I could've written the same content, and I've only been doing this for a few months. The book does offer a free Udemy course, but given the material in the book, I probably wouldn't waste my time.

So if you want a book that gives high-fives to a circle of friends and cheers you on for opening credit cards responsibly, buy this book. Otherwise, move along. There are better resources out there.

The author thinks he'll charge $10 for this one day, but in my opinion this book would probably have difficulty selling many copies at $0.99. It's more useful to raise awareness to get people reading particular travel hacking blogs.

Quick read, simple concept, interesting topic!

Who knew? It is actually pretty easy to travel hack. I've heard those rumors and stories from people who have a friend of a friend that finds some conniving way to game the system to their advantage. This friend of a friend always seems to get ridiculously good deals, to meet important people, and get to places where nobody you actually know has ever been. It seems to be some far off and difficult thing that normal people can't do. I was curious, and the book takes less than an hour to read, so I checked this one out. It's pretty well laid out, and *spoiler alert* it gives a step by step method of using credit card travel points that anybody can follow. Overall, I recommend it because of it's simplicity. Individuals can choose to implement it themselves or not depending on how they like to manage their money, but it takes that rumored concept which that one friend of a friend utilized to get all that cool stuff and lays out how it's actually done. Interesting read!

Fabulous

I received my copy from the author.

This book gave me two characters I could relate to. Paul Vaughn is kind, good hearted and not altogether sure of himself. While he may be curious about submission and playing with the thought that he might to explore that, he is nobody’s pushover and stands up for himself and what he knows is right just as easily as he’ll push his own needs away when he feels somebody else’s needs are more urgent. All of these qualities make him the perfect caregiver for Adam Kent.

When the book starts Adam is the polar opposite of Paul. Cantankerous, easily irritated and angry with his body and the unfairness of life in general, he just wants to be left alone so he can wallow in his depression. This might have made him a horrible character, except that his feelings and reactions make perfect sense. Of course Adam is upset and angry. He lost his eye-sight over the course of three weeks and as far as he’s concerned, the rest of his life went with it. How can he be independent, a writer or a Dom if he can’t see? He’s made up his mind that he’s better off on his own and determined to make sure nobody sticks around to try and take care of him. Of course, he wasn’t prepared to come up against a force named Paul.

I loved the way Paul’s quiet determination slowly but carefully coaxed Adam out of his depression. Maybe Adam has to push his way through anger before he can start on the road to recovery, but Paul is prepared for that – even if knowing what is happening and why doesn’t necessarily make it any easier to deal with unreasonable outbursts or the conflicting signals Adam is sending him.

I loved the process these two men went through. I hurt for them when they thought they were wrong for each other while I, the reader knew, exactly how perfect their fit was. And I adore the way that particular issue was resolved.

I should probably say something about the title, because I think it was rather cleverly chosen. Paul has caught a glimpse of the world of BDSM and thinks he might be interested in a closer look at what he privately calls ‘the dark side’. So, does the title refer to his journey down that particular road? Or does the title reflect Adam’s very literal need to submit to the darkness which has surrounded him ever since he lost his eyesight? I won’t tell, of course, but I will say that I liked the way this title and all its nuances played out in the book.

And then there is something I’ve loved in most if not all of K.C Wells’s books This lady is a genius when it comes to giving the reader angst which is neither contrived nor drawn out. In fact, in this book it wasn’t the conflict itself that had me on the edge of my seat but rather the certainty that conflict was coming - and knowing exactly why - while not knowing what form it would take and how long it might take Adam and Paul to fix the issue. For me, who isn’t a huge fan of angst, it was a perfect scenario.

And then I come to the heat levels in this book. I’ve read plenty of hot books in the past. This has been the first time ever I’ve felt the need to contact the author mid-read and tell them about it.

So yeah, I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I had to take my time reading it because of other commitments but knowing the story was waiting for me gave me something good to look forward while I went about my business. In K.C. Wells I may have found the M/M romance writer who comes closest to my personal set of reading requirements, which makes me a very lucky, happy and satisfied reader.

I had the pleasure of beta reading this story and I say pleasure because it didn’t take long before I realized Paul and Adam were going to be one of my favorite K.C. Wells couples.

In a few short months 40 year old Adam, has gone from a vibrant, active, man in control, to a blind, depressed recluse. He is convinced that along with his eyesight, everything he had a passion for is lost to him now, from sailing, to his career as an author, not to mention his ability to be a Dom. He has cut himself off from everyone and holed up in the library of his home. He doesn’t need the caretaker his sister insists on hiring and just wants to be left alone, but this new companion is different from the others he has scared off and Adam doesn’t know what to do about that. When Adam decides to scare Paul away by hitting on him and threatening to bend him over his knee, Adam is in for a big, unexpected surprise.

Paul is 23 and recently out of school, having trained in physiotherapy. He is practical and aware of what Adam is going through. He needs this job and is not going to throw Adam a pity party. No matter how mercurial and often downright rude Adam is, Paul is determined to help him get some control back. It doesn’t hurt that Adam sexy as hell, especially when that cold mask cracks just a bit. Paul’s got a great support system of friends, including Sam and Mark and Taylor and David who were the focus of the prior books, if only they didn’t insist on trying to set him up. They mean well, but he can’t tell them that what he wants is to experience something a little less vanilla.

Just as Adam has good and bad days, so does their road to romance. When it finally seems they are forging a good working relationship, things move two steps back, but Paul is not deterred and is willing to give back as good as he gets. As they go from grudging employer/employee to working as a team, their interest in each other simmers and their first unexpected encounter left my jaw hanging open.

The beauty of the story is watching Paul help Adam realize that there is very little he has to give up once he accepts his condition and learns to adapt. Paul is so tenacious and invested in helping Adam, I couldn’t resist loving his character and in the end, neither could Adam. When Adam begins to step back out into the world, finding the things he always loved aren’t completely lost to him, he is revealed to be a passionate and sexy man who may actually have a sense of humor.

I know I’ve said it before, but seriously, K.C. Wells knows how to write sex scenes and Adam and Paul are no exception! Whether it’s dirty and quick or tender and slow, vanilla or with a hint of kink, the men have sizzling chemistry that only intensifies once their feelings get involved.

If BDSM is not your thing, don’t let that put you off of this story. The BDSM element is there and adds a little kink, but it is not hardcore. It is focused on Paul wanting to experience some kinks he has only fantasized about and while Adam is more than willing to help Paul he fears that his disability will hinder him from really satisfying Paul’s needs if he wants to explore some heavier kinks.

There is a bit of outside drama and conflict stemming from Adam’s sister’s interference in his life as she tries to “help” him. It is also the catalyst for some great moments when Paul shows just how far he is willing to go to help and protect Adam.

The setting of the Isle of Wight is again brought to life by the descriptive writing. If you’ve read the prior stories Waiting for a Prince (Island Tales Book 1) and September's Tide (Island Tales Book 2)you’ll be glad to see all those familiar faces back, but the story is a standalone so you can jump right in and I definitely recommend that you do it.

Sigh....what can I say? This book is perfection! Well written, great characters, a storyline filled with angst and joy and love. Paul gets hired to be companion to Adam, a writer who has lost his sight. Adam is snarky, angry, and hates the world. He has closed himself off from the world and stays in his house, fighting against everyone and everything.

Paul, doesn't give up easily though and gets through to Adam and shows him he can have and live his life. When Paul finds out Adam is a Dom, is spikes his interest and they both begin to explore their feelings. Learning to communicate beyond seeing has them reaching for more together.

Great addition to the series!

Great reference I bought when starting out as an RN. Now that I am entering my second year of NP school I am re-reading to brush up on my Lab interpretation skills. Is written in the UK so some terminology and measurements are different than in the US, but not a big deal for any intelligent person to figure out.

Another good one from Paul Billheimer

In the first part of the book the author discusses various differences in a number of theological areas; i.e. Calvinism and Armenianism, aspects of Pentecostalism and Holiness, etc. While his review of these topics is by no means exhaustive, it certainly covers the main points adequately. In the second part of the book, he outlines a plan with biblical support for unity among Christians of all denominations based on agape love. While I won't go in to the details, it is well worth the read and I recommend in to anyone who wishes to draw closer to God

An enduring classic for all ages!

I first read this story nearly 30 years ago, when I was not quite yet a teenager; I've read it many times since. It never fails to delight, fascinate, amuse, and enthrall me. It is by turns hilarious and innovative, combining science, fantasy, whimsy, and adventure in an intoxicating magma that explodes in an eruption of high drama. OK...perhaps that last sentence was over the top, but when you're trying to describe a fantasy tale about the explosion of the Krakatoa volcano, you can get burned by using too many cute metaphors and adjectives. Look...let's keep it simple. This book rocks. It rolls. It even shakes and rattles. The story is funny, the scenes are well-choreographed, the premise is captivating, and the narrative is told in a splendidly droll manner. So, if you are 10 years old, or 20, or an old geezer like me who still likes a good kick in the head every now and then, buy this book and read it. It's got balloons, diamonds, sharks, a volcano, exotic foods, fantastical houses, and stuff that will blow your mind. Now...please tell me you liked this review!

The richer a fellow is, the better I like him

Kids obsess over the darndest things. Scooters. Small electronic pets. Plastic accoutrements that somehow incorporate the word "jelly" into their titles. And while I am an ancient 26 years of age with only dim recollections of my idyllic midwestern youth, I think I can say with perfect certainty that there is one subject that very very few kids obsess over. Ballooning. When was the last time your child begged you for a lifetime subscription to (actual publications) "Ballooning Magazine" or "Aerostat Hot Air Balloon Magazine"? This isn't to say that when the local carnival comes to town, some kids wouldn't leap at the chance of hopping into one of those balloon rides that go up and down. But will they seriously seek out literature that feeds this all-consuming hunger for all things dirigible? William Pene du Bois apparently thought so. And so, with his 1948 Newbery Award winning, "The Twenty-One Balloons", Pene du Bois gives us a tale that is part Jules Verne part H.G. Wells with just a touch of Rube Goldberg for spice. And while I doubt that many children today will pore over the intricate technical aspects of this otherwise fun ride, they will at least be intrigued by its tale of a man, his dream, and his encounter with a truly original society.

If there was one thing Professor William Waterman Sherman was tired of, it was teaching mathematics to little children. For years and years he'd done it and finally, once retired, he was given a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream. Sherman would outfit himself a fabulous balloon. It would be the second largest ever commissioned and would carry a small wicker house, in which Sherman would be able to sail in perfect peace and comfort. Containing a great deal of food, the hope on his part was to be able to sail around the world for at least a year without having to come into contact with another human being. On August 15, 1883 he sets out above the Pacific in a single balloon to live in the sky. On September 8, 1883 he is picked up by a passing American freighter in the Atlantic while, "clinging to the debris of twenty deflated balloons". How is this possible? Where did the balloons come from? How did he travel around the world so quickly? And what stories has he to tell? "The Twenty-One Balloons" is Sherman's wild, impossible, and truly original tale of his time spent on the island of Krakatoa, mere days before it exploded sky high. And what he found there will astound.

Pene du Bois begins this book with a rather touching caveat. He points out that just prior to publication his publishers couldn't help but notice similarities between this story and F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story, "The Diamond As Big As the Ritz". Pene du Bois admits that some of the similar details are a bit striking, but that he really hadn't heard of Fitzgerald's version before. A quick perusal of the two stories is enough to convince me that Pene du Bois is certainly telling the truth. Though in both tales we view rich opulent societies that own a mountain filled with diamonds and use their wealth to maintain both secrecy and a higher standard of life, Fitzgerald's story is obviously a slyly clever critique of his contemporaries while Pene du Bois concocts a delightful confection of various "what ifs". Kids reading "The Twenty-One Balloons" will instantly wish to find themselves on Krakatoa (pre-volcanic eruption, of course) and to eat at a different restaurant establishment every night.

The best word for this particular book is "innovative". When Sherman crash lands, nude, on Krakatoa, he meets its European inhabitants. Because they are so incredibly rich (all due to Krakatoa's diamond core) they spend their days inventing wild games and conveniences while indulging in delightful foods and expansions of the mind. Pene du Bois's original illustrations bring Krakatoa brilliantly to life while also explaining the technical aspects of everything from balloon merry-go-rounds to beds that change their own sheets. Though I sincerely doubt that any publisher has gone so far as to print this book without the original pictures, make absolutely certain that your book has them if you're going to purchase it. In some ways they brought to mind the delightful scribbles of Ronni Solbert in the equally amusing children's book, "The Pushcart War".

Many kids find themselves saddled with the assignment of choosing and reading one Newbery Award winning book for school. And a child could do far worse than choose the charming, "The Twenty-One Balloons". I like to think that the book is as much fun to read as it was for William Pene du Bois to write. Brilliantly conceived and full of lovely little ideas, this is one award winner that's certain to remain much loved for years and years to come. A pip.

Can't Go Wrong with a Book Like This

I have just about every Newbery Award winning book on my bookshelf and I've read most of them. But not all. In particular, many of the ones written before 1950 or so still need my attention. So, periodically, I try to pick up one I haven't read and give it a go. Having just finished reading Simon Winchester's Krakatoa, where he gives such a glowing report of this book, I pulled it down from the shelf.
This is a fun book. It tells the story of a retired math teacher, William Waterman Sherman, who builds a balloon to help him get away from it all by spending a year floating through the skies. Instead, he quickly finds himself downed on the island of Krakatoa where he finds a secret colony of people living quite comfortably. He joins them. Unfortunately, in a couple days, Krakatoa erupts, destroying the island almost completely. Fortunately, the colony had prepared for the chance of eruption and everyone is saved.
Published in 1947, this book is filled with a little interesting science and a lot of fantasy. If it has a weakness, it is that this book feels a little more dated than some of the other older Newbery winners. It doesn't feel dated because of its content, however, just its prose style. Its a little formal and relates a post-Victorian view of the world which many young people probably will not understand very well.
Still, I enjoyed this story and the drawings by Mr. DuBois very much. When it comes right down to it, you can hardly go wrong with a Newbery winner. Still one of the best signs of excellence in the world of fiction--for children or no.
