For weeks I pored over my galley copy cover to cover, enjoying the completely new format, extraordinary illustrations and fresh content. This book is so much more than merely the 1994 Chicken Health Handbook with a fresh coat of paint; this version is a wholly transformed version worthy of its own distinguishing title.

Widely regarded as the Patron Saint of Poultry since her 1994 book of the same name became the chicken keeper’s bible, Gail Damerow has kept her finger on the pulse of chicken management innovations, advances and trends, bringing us this completely re-calibrated, modernized Chicken Health Handbook. More than a guide to chicken health, this book is a call to deliberate thought and informed chicken care decision-making, concisely providing the tools necessary in chapters that read like a novel.

Packed with pragmatic health-keeping information that embraces a holistic model of wellness, this book offers trouble-shooting tools and a panoply of real-world solutions based in solid science. It should be standard issue with every chick purchased.

Ms. Damerow provides a refreshing reality check on many of the feel-good sound bites regarding holistic/natural/herbal approaches to chicken keeping that abound on chicken related blogs and books in recent years. Damerow writes, "Instructions found online and in print publications describing herbal medicine for backyard chickens suggest that such-and-such herb "is said to" work for a certain disease, or that you "try" such-and-such herb as a treatment- which sounds suspiciously like experimenting at the expense of an ailing chicken."

She does not push or extol the virtues of any given herbal or natural product- she simply presents facts, allowing the reader to make science-based decisions for their flocks themselves. She methodically teases out grains of truth where they exist, stressing that alternative remedies are not a panacea. For example, with regard to “natural worm control,” the author states they are “...more suited for preventing worms than to removing an existing worm load.” "It's best not to rely entirely on natural methods unless you are certain your chickens are not suffering from an overload of worms, especially if you expect your birds to live into old age."
Similarly, with respect to diatomaceous earth, she writes: "Respirable particles of crystalline silica in diatomaceous earth...sticks, (to chickens' lung tissue) causing scar tissue to form that impairs respiration."

She sums up her perspective on treating sick chickens as follows:
“Going by the philosophy of ‘whatever works,’ our family uses both conventional and traditional, or so-called alternative, remedies on our human selves. Sometimes the alternative methods are more effective and have fewer side effects than prescription drugs. So we are open to using alternatives on our livestock as well. When dealing with a sick chicken, however, we tend to be more cautious about trying alternatives that may or may not work. One reason is that chickens hide their pain as long as they can. By the time a chicken exhibits signs of not being well, it needs help fast. Since a chicken can’t tell us if it’s feeling better, unless a treatment works fast, we can’t tell if it’s working at all. We therefore limit alternative livestock therapies to their use as immunity enhancers.”

A must have!

This is a great book full of all the things you need to know to make informed decisions about your chickens. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants chickens or anyone that already has them and wants sound, proven, factual information about health and care problems. I will add that while I purchased the kindle version,( 90% of my books are virtual because I don't have the room to have a large bookcase so I only have copies of great cookbooks, plant and garden and now chicken health care) I will be adding the hardcover edition to my exclusive book collection. 2 thumbs up!

An excellent guide for using grammar to improve writing

Martha Kolln has created a practical text for writers and, especially, teachers of writing. Rhetorical Grammar proves that the present day "wisdom" that the teaching of grammar might be detrimental to writing is not so wise after all. Focusing only on those issues that relate grammatical choices directly to the writer's purpose and audience, or on the long-range development of the writer's ideas, Professor Kolln shows us how to make our texts clear, direct, and reader friendly. She also avoids the pitfalls of traditional grammar teaching, concentrating instead on those questions that focus only on the needs of real writers in real writing situations. Among the issues covered are sentence rhythm (for example, how the placement of an adverbial in the beginning, middle, or end of a sentence affects the reader), how to choose between coordination or subordination, and the differences between form and structure classes of words (far more practical than merely discussing "parts of speech").
After each major section of the book, Professor Kolln includes, rather than the usual fill-in-the-blanks exercises, a combination of writing exercises and "Group Discussion" problems, employing real texts or real-life writing situations.
Teachers of writing will find much to be thankful for in this little book, from clear explanations of composition choices to dozens of useful classroom activities. This is a must have text for any English teacher, from elementary school through graduate school.

A fine book on writing persuasively

As a lawyer, I spend considerable time revising my own writing. Professor Kolln's lessons on grammar helped me learn how to write more efficiently and with more confidence. Like most people, I often relied on the "... just sounds better that way ..." technique of editing my sentences. Kolln explained how to focus the reader's attention by making deliberate choices of grammar. I was surprised to learn how easy it is to control sentence rhythm, emphasizing the most important word in each phrase. She also explained how sentences can be organized to stick together (cohesiveness), so the reader doesn't get lost or frustrated. Slightly over 250 pages, Kolln's book is short enough to be reviewed again and again. Her system of "rhetorical reminders" is a set of tools that should be valuable to any writer, at any level of proficiency.

WAH, fantastic.

Rhetorical Grammar, by Martha Kolln, is a great way to get a grasp on the grammatical intricasies of the English language. But, in order to enjoy it and get something out of it, you have to be willing to do the exercises, at least the even ones, and work with the book. If you don't give the book a chance you won't like it.
Kolln lays out a very effective method of teaching grammar. Her method is so effective, in fact, that top linguistics and English graduate/undergraduate programs, nationwide, use this book. What Kolln does is explain grammar in a way which doesn't involve sentence diagramming, the most difficult part of many grammar classes. She explains how grammar controls the language.
Kolln has a way of explaining grammar that will help anyone struggling in the subject to become a better writer. The best thing about this book is that it's written in a way that writers, college students, graduate students and even high school students can understand and learn from. This is one book I'll never regret having bought.

Explanation: In the latest Visual Basic update on GitHub, Microsoft accidentally introduced a significant bug that you�should be aware of. In the Visual Basic project properties dialog on one of the tabs (Application), is a drop down box for selecting the "startup object". This can be either a Main method or a System.Windows.Forms instance (or System.Windows.Window for WPF). When you do a rename on a form (say from the code editor in source or from the solution explorer) currently set as the startup form the rename doesn't cascade to the startup object project property cause the project to enter an invalid state where the user must now manually reset this project property from the now nonexistent Form to the new name. This is a huge annoyance.

My Results

Eric Cressey knows how to get people bigger and stronger, period. I got to do the Maximum Strength Program last summer and during that time I had my 1RM deadlift go from 275 to 400lbs in four months. I am more mobile than ever and I am no longer in pain (used to be low back). I now have great posture and have built a great base of strength.

This book outlines the four phases with multistep pictures of the exercises (both strength training and mobility/warm-up). Also there is a nice section dedicated towards nutrition as well.

Eric is 110% correct when he says you need to get stronger to get bigger. If you have stalled with your progress and want to get bigger and stronger, there is no better way then with Maximum Strength, for under $15 you can not go wrong.

Delivers exactly what it says

In a time where most muscle books don't put out anything innovative any more, Eric Cressey delivers something genuinely fresh. Obviously powerlifting style routines like the one in this book are not brand new, but putting one in a more mass market package like this is. Cressey makes powerlifting accessible to your average weight lifter and even to those who may not have much experience with resistance training at all.

The 16 week routine presented in the book makes use of a number of common and uncommon movements, many of which are not known to the average gym goer. Each movement is well explained and given to the reader in an unintimidating fashion. Cressey also presents a full chapter on dynamic flexibility warm-ups and soft tissue work with more depth than I've seen in any other book. Including those concepts in the program not only insure that the book's reader will get bigger and stronger, but that they'll improve their posture and remain injury free. Those factors are often overlooked in books like this but are very important to a resistance training program.

The book introduces a focus on lower repetition work like no other book I've read. For those of us that are interested in fitness from BOTH an aesthetic standpoint (looking good) and a performance standpoint, this book is a must have.

Must-read

This book is a must-read. I heard a lot of hype about this book before purchasing, and I'm glad I finally bought it. I did the entire 4 month routine and honestly, my body feels better than it ever has in the past.

I was used to the traditional bodybuilding bodypart split of chest on Monday, legs on Tuesday, Arms on Wednesday, etc etc. For years, I just accepted that this was the way to train your body. I just dealt with back pain and shoulder pain as part of the "price of working out." Doing 5 exercises for your back in one day, and 5 exercises for your shoulders in one day is the absolute wrong way to train your body, unless you are an actual bodybuilder, but for the average fitness enthusiast, that just doesn't apply.

Eric's book outlines splitting your routines into upper body days and lower body days. The routines are easy to follow. Full detailed pictures, and explanations. One of the most important things he advocates is varying the rep range each week within the 4 week routine. You probably never have done any exercise of 8 sets of 2 reps or 10 sets of 3 reps. You have to keep in mind Eric is a Strength & Conditioning Coach with the goal of getting you stronger. I was hesitant, but you have to open your mind and try it.

My body feels stronger, and more balanced. There are a few non-traditional exercises that you probably have never heard of, or are hesitant to try out. My advice would be to do everything in the book to a T. It works. You may be reluctant to do so much deadlifting and squatting. You may have never hear of scapular push ups, walls slides, face pulls, or behind the neck band pull aparts. Open your mind. Follow the routines exactly and you will be glad you did. I know I am. Your body will feel so much stronger, more balanced, and your posture improves. I hope this doesn't sound like a 3 a.m info-mercial testimonial for the latest fitness product, because it's not. I'm a Certified Personal Trainer and a Certified Gym Rat who has been lifting for 11 years. Open your mind, try the routines, follow to a T. Your body will thank you.
