Great Survey of the Calculus

Priestley's work is a gem in that it incorporates the full-orbed liberal arts approach to the calculus. Professor Priestley places the differential and integral calculus in the context of history (the best methodology for teaching any aspect of mathematics). You will also find a good number of brain-expanding exercises and real world applications strategically placed in the text. This book is a "must-have" text for any teacher of mathematics and for a student who desires to understand the calculus in the context of history, science, philosophy, and literature. This is education at its best!

Conceptual introduction to calculus.

I have worked through the book myself and can report that I have not come away with any of the negative impressions reviewer Blasjo is talking about. In any case, the rigorous development of calculus has been an evolutionary process with the big ideas having come first, and the logical support developed later. And any serious student of calculus will agree that new concepts and subtleties have to be mastered in the course of study, usually starting with incomprehension gradually giving way to illumination.

This book is unique in the way it presents the *concepts* of calculus and ties it with the historical development of the subject. The exercises should be worked on thoughtfully and even when right answers are obtained some time should be allotted to thinking why the solution works and what is it in the structure of the problem that makes the solution right. Maths is hard work and this books give excellent direction to the effort expected of the student.

And I do not see why advanced topics should be left out of the book purposely. One needs to realise that if we waited for full understanding of any subject before we can start using it, then we will have to wait forever. I believe a lot of cutting-edge mathematics research tries to answer the seemingly elementary question "What is a number?". Surely, we all have a functional understanding that is good enough to master the maths at our individual levels, although the concept of a number can get tricky when thought about very fundamentally. And we are conscious that a deeper understanding is possible if more time is invested, but we accept as adequate the present understanding as long as it is coherent with the maths the student knows thus far. Seen this way, I have no problems with analysis level material kept out of the book, the same way full blown Shakespeare's works are kept out Grade 1 textbooks.

This book has a lot of value to deliver to the intelligent student not trained in mathematics, but with an aptitude for it.

A murder among Manhattan's swanky prep-school set forms the premise for this rather disappointing debut novel by Giberga. Cristina Garcia-Vasquez is a teen queen who carries an honor's load of classes at her exclusive but demanding private school, plays the lead in its production of The Merchant of Venice, dates soccer player Brian, and accepts the doting of her loving parents. It's the stuff of high-school fantasies, until a girl who is at a party Crissy attends is brutally murdered later that evening. While Crissy's narrative voice recounts events at an authentically breakneck speed, and with a slightly spoiled, jejune air, readers will never quite believe that the world she describes is contemporary upper-crust New York City. Giberga uses few genuine names and places, leading to bland descriptions that could be drawn from any US city; similarly, little in the language or manners of her likable cast of characters conveys a genuine life of privilege. One incredible subplot hangs on the notion that Crissy's mother's decision to become a stay-at-home mom is newsworthy enough for television coverage; in the meantime, Crissy's days are so full that the murder and its repercussions don't have much emotional impact. Those who were hoping for starry nights of excess among Manhattan's elite will be better off renting Whit Stillman's Metropolitan or nabbing Linda Wolfe's Wasted (1989), on the Robert Chambers ``preppie murder'' case, off the adult shelves. Sixteen-year-old Cristina Garcia-Vasquez and her friends live in fancy apartments, attend super-expensive private schools, and do and have everything else you'd associate with A-List teens in New York City. And that's got to include parties in these huge apartments when parents are away for weeks at a time, right?

When a girl is murdered in a subway station, and Cristina was at the party where this girl was last seen alive, life changes drastically for Cristina, her family, and her friends. Matters are not helped by the segment on TV about the Garcia-Vasquez family, focusing on Janine Billings, the murdered girl, and Cristina's stay-at-home mom.

This book has a lot of interesting elements: The funny hate messages from feminists about Cristina's mom, the mystery of Janine Billings' murder, the press stalking Cristina, her friends, and her family...

This book is interesting and amusing at times. It is not, however, a book that will stick with you forever. It'll keep you entertained, though, and that's good enough.

This bood was a really good book. It kept me on the edge of my seat waiting or the next part. It's basically about a girl adn her bes friend hanging with a wrong person that could change their life forever. The girl's name was Chrissy and her best friend was Francesca. they are on the A list. They live high-class fabulous Manhattan apartment, attend the best schools and are just living the life of a celebrity. Being all that great can however get them in trouble. they were one of the people that sort of knew what happened on the day of that party they went to. Chrissy and Francesca were suddenly a huge famous celebrity because of what they know about "what happened at the party" they went to. A fight started out and finally became into a murder case with so many peole questioned. Then finally Francesca's boyfriend was accused of murdering the girl that left the party screaming.

These two young girls faces pressure and realizes about what the murder has done to them. They had loyalty and trust and that brought them closer knowing at all times, that they always had each other to live for.

A Foeign Affair

I enjoy reading about the Victorian Era. This story had a lot of mystery and intrigue, a real page-turner, always trying to guess the name of the murderer and surprised at the end.

Liberty Lane in a Foreign Land

After reading A Dangerous Affair by Caro Peacock for the HarperCollins First Look Program and the adventures of Liberty Lane, I decided to pick up the first in the series to see how Liberty's exploits began. Check out my review of A Dangerous Affair here. A Foreign Affair by Caro Peacock is set in England and France prior to the ascension of Queen Victoria to the throne of England. Liberty Lane is staying with family when she receives word from her father that he will be returning home from Paris shortly. Rather than wait for him to return, she runs off to Dover to meet him, but she soon learns of his death.

Liberty's impetuous nature leads her into dark alleys, a morgue, carriages with duplicitous men, and a household full of secrets as she attempts to uncover the truth behind her father's death. She refuses to accept the news that he died in a dual, and she is enlisted by men of influence to spy on the Mandeville household while feigning to be a governess.

Caro Peacock has a way with description. Readers will be thrust into cramped spaces with large, round scary men, like in the passage below:

"The man who called himself Harry Trumper had arranged things so that he and I were sitting side by side with our backs to the horses, the other man facing us with a whole seat to himself. As my sight cleared, I could see that he needed it. It was not so much that he was corpulent--though indeed he was that--more that his unweildy body spread out like a great toad's, with not enough in the way of bone or sinew to control his bulk" (Page 39)

Readers will enjoy how Liberty's relationship in this novel develops into more of a friendship in the second novel, rather than the fatherly relationship we see in A Foreign Affair. Liberty is a Victorian Age Nancy Drew, led by her impetuous and curious nature to solve mysteries. Peacock's use of language unfolds the intricate relationships between the characters and the mysteries in this novel.

About the Author
Research and teaching interests involve financial and managerial accounting. He and Professor Ross L. Watts received American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Awards in 1979 and 1980 for their joint papers. He received the American Accounting Association award for Seminal Contribution to Accounting Literature in 2004. He was the 1978 winner of the Competitive Manuscript Award, sponsored by the American Accounting Association, for his paper, "The Costs and Benefits of Cost Allocation." His research, which has come to be called "positive theories of accounting," seeks to understand the costs and benefits of various accounting procedures. He and Watts co-authored a book, Positive Accounting Theory, published by Prentice-Hall in 1986.

Think Management Accounting Rather Than Cost Accounting

Too often management accounting is completely subsumed in cost accounting. Yes, they are part of the same topic, but they have somewhat different emphases. This book covers costs, but it is really more focused on how you allocated decision rights, set measurement criteria, and how you reward people to get the behavior you want. It is also very helpful in clarifying thinking about what could be going wrong if you aren't getting the behavior you wanted out of a given system of measurement and reward.
The writing is very good and the organization of the book is sound and helpful. While there are charts and graphs it is not a book full of color and pictures. It is a book with words and ideas that are helpfully supplemented as needed. But the self-study problems and cases are set off from the main text by being on different color pages. This helps in locating what you are after.
There is a wealth of thought provoking problems and short cases to help promote discussion and provoke your thinking on the topics discussed in each chapter.
Another aspect of the book I really like are the concept questions in each chapter that help you gauge your understanding of what you have just read. The solutions for these are provided in the back of the book so you can know if you are "getting it" or not.
This is a fine and very useful text.

Worse book in my entire MBA program

Beware ! This book does perhaps the poorest example explaining any concepts. I have never had so much stress in my life than taking a managerial accounting class with this book. I mean I actually couldn't sleep because of this book!

I took this class last year and I just finished my MBA and I am working on my Phd now, and I thought I would reflect and give some valuable advice to you, my fellow students.

If you don't have a prior managerial accounting background, go read as much as you can before you get into this book. Or you will be completely stressed out, lost and feel that you are a dummy. This book makes smart students feel dum. I mean really dum. You are not dum, the book just lacks clear explanations.

This book deals mostly with managerial accounting. For example if you are paid $100 per day at your job, really you are costing the company more than what you are being paid, really you use resources, like from human resources who hired you, electricity costs, phone costs, IT, etc, so your true cost to the company broken down is probably $160 per day. This is called cost allocation, in a crude example.

Easy concept right?, Just that you will not be able to learn this easily from this book unless you have a deep prior background in this. The good examples Zimmerman(author) gives are spoiled by the majority of his jargon and bad examples.

I honestly found myself at one point reading 1 page for over an hour to understand! (and I am a high A student). In my entire MBA program, I never had a worse book, nor more stress!!!

Ultimately, I had to do many exhaustive Internet searches to learn cost allocation theory.

Some reasons why this book is so bad:

(1) Does not explain many concepts with clear explanations

(2) Uses too much jargon

(3) Shows graphs and vital data one the next pages instead of including them on the same page, Imagine as you read you have to constantly change the page to see the graphs and charts, Very poor!

(4) Zimmeran doesn't want to teach, rather he wants to prove to you that he is smart!

(5) THE WORST

Perhaps the worst is the homework problems in the back. Zimmerman (the author) does not give sufficient examples of how to solve these examples. Nor does the book give the answers. Also, some problems are extremely hard, even the professor of the class had difficulty solving and explaining this. What is the goal of a book if students have to search elsewhere and be stressed out to learn?

I would say that this book is like taking a class in Algebra and having questions and concepts explained in Calculus.

Again, if you don't have a prior background in any of this, go take a class at a junior college on cost accounting to prepare for this book, you will need it. Or you too will be so stressed out!!

Jerold Zimmerman, please don't take personal offense, you may be a smart guy, but the art of education is explaining concepts easily and showing your work, which in my opinion and my fellow students' opinion, overall this book lacks.

Bloated with Homework Problems

The most surprising thing was how much of the book is homework problems (blue pages). Viewed edge-on they appear to be ~50% of the pages. Many problems are excessively wordy, fine as novellos but reading 2 pages to get to the issues is often tedious. The text is well written, but I didn't find the subject to have as much meat as other MBA subjects like Finance or Operations Research. I understand it is one of the better books on Managerial Accounting. I have 27 years experience at many companies, so others might find the material more enlightening.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Donald J. DeCoste is Associate Director of General Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and has been teaching chemistry at the high school and college levels for 26 years. He earned his BS in Chemistry and PhD from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. At UIUC he has developed chemistry courses for nonscience majors, preservice secondary teachers, and preservice elementary teachers. He teaches courses in introductory chemistry and the teaching of chemistry and has received the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award four times. Don has led workshops for secondary teachers and graduate student teaching assistants, discussing the methods and benefits of getting students more actively involved in class. When not involved in teaching and advising, Don enjoys spending time with his wife and three children.

A genuine, timeless classic...

In his classic book, "Hiroshima," John Hersey simply and powerfully tells the story of six residents of Hiroshima who were dramatically and traumatically impacted by the dropping of the atomic bomb near the end of World War II. I've always been fascinated by World War II history and have deeply appreciated works of art like "Band of Brothers" or "Ghost Soldiers," which help to bring humanity and complexity into our perceptions of war, which are too often overly abstract and neatly simplistic (good guys vs. bad guys, hopefully the good guys won). But "Hiroshima" does something even more challenging but no less important for American readers, bringing that humanity and complexity from the perspective of the "enemy," in this case Japanese doctors, clergy, mothers, and office workers with no particular political or military associations.

The central strength of the book is its gripping account of the lives of these six individuals, setting the stage before the bomb was dropped, describing the events that immediately followed the immense explosion, and following the impact of that cataclysmic event in the ensuing months and years. In fact, a final chapter, written 40 years after the original publication of the book, gives another update for the six featured people, four decades down the road. And, in all of this, Hersey manages to tell a powerful, vivid story without getting preachy or political. At the end of the day, we get a sense of the devastation, a hint of the suffering, a glimmer of the confusion, and just a faint taste of the impact of that first atomic bomb. It's a worthy experience for anyone, from any nationality or political persuasion.

I do have one minor quibble with Hersey's approach. With only six subjects to describe, I found it odd and unnecessarily limited in scope that two of them were physicians and two of them were Christian clergy (though one was Catholic and one was Protestant). Had he found a more diverse cross-section of Japanese society, I think that the main strength of the book would have been augmented. But this critique is truly insignificant within the context of the power of Hersey's work.

Ultimately, part of my experience in appreciating this book comes from a cultural upbringing that celebrated the United States' military might and historical successes with an abstract triumphalist tone, failing to bother to understand the devastating effects that war brings to all sides of any military conflict. As I've studied and learned as much military history as I can, my perspective has thankfully become more nuanced, and I'm mindful of the dangers of looking at an event like the bombing of Hiroshima as nothing more than a good old fashioned Yankee whooping. "Hiroshima" helps to counter that cheap view of human worth by shedding light on the horrors of war, from the often untold perspective of the defeated. It's true that the victors get to write history, and I'm glad that Hersey took the brave step to make sure that the impact on the vanquished is at least known and understood on some level. He does so without making sweeping political implications, without suggesting that the Hiroshima bombing was necessarily a mistake. He merely says that this event happened, that it was tragically awful for many people, that real people suffered and died, and that we would do well to be aware of those realities when we think back in history at war. I'd recommend the book to absolutely anyone who can see the potential value of being stretched and challenged in that direction.

Two Warnings: the Edition and the Moral

The Kindle edition is missing Chapter 5. This is the eBook edition published by Pickle Partners (ASIN B00QU4BBTY). Chapter 5 is the John Hersey follow up 40 years later telling the story of the main characters after the original magazine article in 1946. The kindle edition does not disclose that it includes only the 1946 magazine article text. Read a physical edition published after 1989 for a more complete picture.

John Hersey's "Hiroshima"
After reading a note written by a German Jesuit priest who survived the atomic bomb at Hiroshima, John Hersey located him and was introduced to five other survivors and documented their stories. When I first read the book, I found the story moving, shocking and disturbing. The vivid depictions of the survivors and their struggle to live through the next few days are eye-openers. The new chapter added 40 years later provides some closure to the story of their lives.

The prose is simple yet the reader is able to get a good grasp on events and environment. John Hersey wrote Hiroshima in a neutral tone and style. He told interviewer Steve Rothman, "The flat style was deliberate and I still think I was right to adopt it. A high literary manner, or a show of passion, would have brought me into the story as a mediator. I wanted to avoid such mediation, so the reader's experience would be as direct as possible."

The issue of the magazine was prepared in great secrecy, even the clerks and staff of The New Yorker magazine itself were not let in on the secret, and the weekly proofs for publication were seen only by the editors. Part of the reason was the subject. While in Japan, John Hersey could not actively seek interviewees in Hiroshima since the atomic bomb's aftereffects were heavily censored by the U.S. Army of Occupation in 1946. Newspapers in Japan were not allowed to mention the atomic bombs and the survivors, and even poetry mentioning the events was illegal. Attempts by the Nippon Times to publish Hersey's article in Japan were blocked in 1946, but copies of the book in English surreptitiously made their way to Tokyo in 1947. It was eventually allowed to be published there in 1948.

The New Yorker magazine originally intended to serial publish the story, but made an unprecedented decision to devote the entire issue to John Hersey's story. When the article was first published it sold out within hours. People were hawking the magazine for up to $20 (a great sum in those days) and the publisher was unable to fulfill Albert Einstein's order of 1000 copies.

Many critics on sites like Amazon complain Hiroshima does not give the reasons for the U.S. employing the atomic bombs and so is anti-American. Hersey's purpose was not to delve into the argument of whether the bombs should have been used, but to report on its effects and the stories of the survivors. This book was originally intended as a long magazine article and it did not have the space to cover all arguments and nuances. The debate of whether the bombs should or should not have been used really didn't exist when Hersey wrote Hiroshima in 1946. There was no question about using the atomic bombs. When the bombs were dropped, America and her allies were in the midst of a total war with Japan, an embrace of death that neither belligerent was willing or could afford to relax. The horrors and struggles of war were still fresh in everyone's minds. This was a new horror, the face of nuclear war to which Americans were vastly ignorant until John Hersey made the world aware.

I also read complaints at Amazon that the article was unbalanced because Hersey did not list Japan’s war crimes, especially the Nanking Massacre, or that because of these war crimes the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki got what they deserved. These arguments are specious at best and immoral at worst. There can be no doubt the Japanese military and the Japanese government were responsible for many war crimes, perhaps even on a greater scale than Nazi Germany. The Nanking Massacre, the Bataan Death March, the Laha Massacre, and the Sandakan Death March to list but a few. The victims of man's inhumanity to man, whether they died in the bombing of Rotterdam, the Holocaust, the Nanking Massacre, the Bismarck Sea incident, the Coventry Blitz, the firebombing of Dresden, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or the Malmedy Massacre - few, if any, of the victims deserved death. The people were all sons and daughters; some were husbands, wives, brothers or sisters. Each one was a human being with a name, hopes and dreams. Each has a story and should be respected and remembered.

War is savage and brutal, but one tragedy does not justify the next, and the killing of one prisoner or civilian does not justify the killing of another.

Every victim deserves to be remembered and have their story told.

Hiroshima gives a face to the victims of the atomic bombs. This is their story.
