Exhaustive and essential

Stuart's exhaustive discography is essential for any Stravinsky collector eager to track down the recordings, whether on vinyl or reissued on CD. Comprehensive session notes help untangle the confusion of when, where, and who, and the Introduction offers an excellent picture of Stravinsky's ongoing conflict with the recording process. Pricey but well worth it.

Worth Fighting For by Sondrae Bennett

I have admitted before that novella's are not really something I read a lot, but Sondrae Bennett had opened me up to a whole new world with her Alpine Woods Shifters books. I read the previous three novella's in this series in one weekend and did a mini-review of each of them on my blog.

Cody has been a character we have seen before and I loved him from the first moment we met him. I was itching to get my hands on his story and was so psyched to see that his was up next. Since we have already met him and Misty, we are familiar with them and invested in their lives. The other books focus more on the wolves and we finally get a peek into the lives of the foxes in Worth Fighting For. Cody has grown up with Misty and has always seen her as a one of the guys and his closest friend. He never imagined they could be more than that to each other, but Misty did. She has been fighting for his attention for quite some time and has almost given up hope. It is not until Misty gets hurt in a fight that happened at the end of the previous book that picks back up in this one, that Cody sees how truly important Misty is to him. Once he finally gives into his feelings for her, wow! Those two are hot! Sondrae manages to pack some steamy scenes into these pages.

Even though this is a novella, Sondrae still packs in all the elements I love. I mentioned the smoking hot romance, but there is also plenty of action and an overall villain trying to spoil everyone's plans as well. The villain is one that overlaps a little from the previous book and I liked that Sondrae tied in older plot lines and continues them on in Worth Fighting For.

There is a lot of humor laced throughout as well. The relationship that Cody and Misty share includes witty banter that comes with years of knowing someone. This led to some very cute moments between the two of them and had me laughing out loud numerous times.

Overall, this is another great addition to this series. I love these shifters and Sondrae continues to suck me in with each new story. I cannot pick these books up without reading them cover to cover in one sitting. My only complaint continues to be that I wish they could be longer. And really that is not a complaint at all, just me wanting more, haha. These could easily be turned into full length novels, but I will take whatever I can get. I would highly recommend these books to anyone looking for a good, fast, sexy read. You can read them out of order, but I would start at the beginning with Artic Winds and go forward from there.

When is it time to cut your losses and save your heart?

Book 4 "Arctic Woods" series.

Plot:
Misty has lusted after Cody since they were teens, but he has never seen her as more than a friend. Will there ever be a HEA for them, or is it time to cut her losses and make a new start?

Comments:

- While this is Book 4 of a series, it doesn't technically need the other books to make sense, or they could be read out of order. BUT characters from other books appear and play integral roles, and have influenced the events of Book 4. There is also a fairly loose multi-book story arc started in Book 3 that continues into "Worth Fighting For".
- Prologue has Misty spying on Samantha at Cody's place from Book 1 "Arctic Winds". The book proper starts at Julie's kidnapping from Book 3 "The Wolf Within".
- Includes excerpt from "Omegas In Love" by Annie Nicholas.

Opinion:
"Worth Fighting For" is a surprisingly enjoyable read. It's a good paranormal with funny, clever characters, and a sweet romance with enough light and shade to really feel you got something out of it. I enjoy Bennett's use of different shifter animals, and having their furry halves affect who they are and what they do - in this case, foxes are small, fast animals. When attacked by bigger beasts, they can do little to protect themselves. It's a nice change from the All Powerful Wolves we usually get.

Book 3 was the first book to introduce a multi-book story arc, and it was cleverly included in "Worth Fighting For". It isn't necessary to know the past history, the arc gives the story substance and drama, but knowing the past gives the characters depth, and entices the reader into reading more.

A really fun story in an enjoyable series. Bennett is building a strong series with moreish books, interwoven so we can see our favourites again, loving, explicit sex and fun, easy dialogue. A recommended book.

Cute is the word

Another installation in the series. We met Cody in the 1st book I believe, and I kinda wondered if we'd see him again. This book took the angle of 'best friends finally see the light'. Well, on his side. Poor Misty, she's always had feelings. And she's the kinda of 'female' character I like. She's described as feisty/strong willed, but has problems with asthma. And of course her best friend Cody has always been there for her with support about that. Those described moments were totally sweet- got love protective sweet men.

It totally helped to have read the 3rd book. Yes, the book stands alone by itself, but I think having read the previous book helps tie it together. Just saying.

In the poignant "Don Jose of La Mancha," Yolanda observes both critically and sympathetically as her widowed mother gingerly approaches a new relationship-with a man Yolanda considers a clueless hick; the reader has previously met Yolanda in "The One Who Watches," in which Yolanda's friend Doris describes the fear and anger she experiences as Yolanda goes shoplifting. In the surreally horrifying "Matoa's Mirror," Kenny gets high on a mixture of drugs and then watches himself in a mirror, as if he's on TV, while he is getting beaten up outside his building. The overarching theme-the struggle to transcend one's roots but never succeeding (nor really wanting to)-is explored with enormous humanity and humor. This fine collection may draw special attention for its depictions of an ethnic group underserved by YA writers, but Cofer's strong writing warrants a close look no matter what the topic. Ages 12-up.

Gr. 7-12. "Dating is not a concept adults in our barrio really get." The contemporary teenage voices are candid, funny, weary, and irreverent in these stories about immigrant kids caught between their Puerto Rican families and the pull and push of the American dream. The young people hang out on the street in front of the tenement El Building in Paterson, New Jersey, where the radios are always turned full blast to the Spanish station and the thin walls can't hold the dramas of the real-life telenovelas. As in her autobiographical adult collection Silent Dancing (1990), Cofer depicts a diverse neighborhood that's warm, vital, and nurturing, and that can be hell if you don't fit in. Some of the best stories are about those who try to leave. Each piece stands alone with its own inner structure, but the stories also gain from each other, and characters reappear in major and minor roles. The teen narrators sometimes sound too articulate, their metaphors overexplained, but no neat resolutions are offered, and the metaphor can get it just right (the people next door "could be either fighting or dancing"). Between the generations, there is tenderness and anger, sometimes shame. In one story, a teenage girl despises the newcomer just arrived from the island, but to her widowed mother, the hick (jibaro) represents all she's homesick for. She is the author of many distinguished titles for young adults such as, CALL ME MARIA, THE MEANING OF CONSEULO, SILENT DANCING: A PARTIAL REMEMBERANCE OD A PUERTO RICAN CHILDHOOD, and THE LINE IN THE SUN. She lives in Georgia where she is the Regents’ and Franklin Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia.

Interesting and well-written

I found the story of this 'gang' of boys to be interesting and well-written. The characters were very real, and so were the situations. A must-read for young adults, and those interested in multi-cultural young adult literature.

about living between two cultures from an teen perspective

This is a collection of short stories about situations Puerto-Rican American teenagers face. The setting is a New Jersey barrio, and the characters are all richly believable and intriguing. My favorite story is the first one: Rita is sent to live with her grandparents in Puerto Rico because she lied to her parents and was caught with a boy where she shouldn't have been. The way her grandparents treat her, and the good natured way Rita protests is quite realistic. She ends up being glad she was sent to her grandparents, and she seems to have gained an appreciation for her roots. In another story, Arturo must spend an hour with his abuelo at the nursing home. At first, he's not so excited, but when the hour is up, he realizes there's a lot more about his grandfather he would like to know.The other stories are equally engaging, though not always as light-hearted and humorous. One of the stories deals with Doris and her friend Rick, who is gay. Everyone in the neighborhood rejects Rick and anything he is involved with. It's a touching and sad piece that really strikes home the importance of tolerance.
