Preface It's easy to get started with Tcl/Tk. Just follow the steps in Appendix A to obtain the wish program and start it up. Then type in a few lines of code, like this:

% button .b -text "Hello, World!" -command exit => .b

% pack .b You'll see the Hello, World! button appear as soon as you enter the pack command. On Windows 95, it will look like this:

You don't have to edit any makefiles or fight with a compiler. You don't need to know everything about the X window system or the Microsoft Foundation Classes. You don't need to wade through pounds of confusing documents to find symbols, such as XA_FONT_NAME. Instead, you type a few lines of Tcl code and immediately see the results.

As you learn more about the Tk widgets, you can write lots of simple programs. With a text widget and 100 lines of Tcl code, you can put together a program for sending electronic mail (e-mail) messages. With a canvas widget and 200 lines of Tcl code, you can create a simple drawing editor.

A few other Tcl/Tk books will help you get started. John Ousterhout's Tcl and the Tk Toolkit starts with a complete overview of the Tcl language and then goes on to describe each of the Tk widgets. The book even describes how to add new functionality to Tcl/Tk by integrating your own C code into the wish program. Brent Welch's book Practical Programming in Tcl and Tk is another good source of Tcl/Tk code examples.

After reading one of the introductory Tcl/Tk books, you will be well acquainted with the nuts and bolts. But you may not have a good understanding of how they fit together to make an application.

We wrote this book to pick up where the others leave off. We assume that you understand some of the Tcl language and that you've written a few simple Tcl/Tk programs. If not, you can pick it up as you read along. But instead of explaining the basics, we focus on areas that are commonly misunderstood-such as the pack command, the bind mechanism, and the canvas widget. We not only explain how these things work but also show how you can use them to build powerful applications.

We explain how the packer works and then show how you can use it

to create a tabbed notebook that displays "pages" of widgets. We explain how binding tags work and then show how you can use

them to handle the modes in a drawing editor. We explain how the canvas works and then show how you can use it

to build a progress gauge, a color wheel, and a calendar.

Along the way, we describe the lessons that we've learned from developing many thousands of lines of Tcl/Tk code. We show you software architectures and programming techniques that will make your Tcl/Tk code easier to maintain. For example, we show how to

Create client/server applications Package Tcl/Tk code into libraries of reusable components Use lists and arrays as data structures Handle common quoting problems

Above all else, we try to present a holistic view of application development. In Chapter 1, we show you how to go about designing an application--from the initial concept to a working prototype to a finished product. Throughout the book, we develop several useful applications: a desktop calculator, a drawing editor, and a daily calendar that will store all of your appointments. In Chapter 8, we show you how to add polish to your finished applications and how to deliver them to customers.

In the course of this book, we develop more than two dozen useful components, including a toolbar, a paned window, a balloon help facility, and a confirmation dialog. We provide complete source code for these components in the software that accompanies this book. You can download this software from the site awl/cp/efftcl/efftcl.html. We encourage you to study these examples and to use them to build your own Tcl/Tk applications!

All of the examples in this book have been carefully designed to work with all recent versions of Tcl/Tk, including: Tcl 7.5 / Tk 4.1 Tcl 7.6 / Tk 4.2 Tcl 8.0 / Tk 8.0

The examples should work with later releases as well. Most of our experience with Tcl/Tk comes from UNIX-based systems, so you will see a lot of references to UNIX throughout the book. But Tcl/Tk is not limited to UNIX systems. The Tcl 8.0 / Tk 8.0 release works cross-platform on UNIX, Windows 95/NT/3.1, and Macintosh systems. Almost all of our examples work identically on all three platforms. (Of course, some examples rely on such programs as /usr/lib/sendmail, which are available only on a UNIX system. Those examples will not work cross-platform without some modification.) Throughout the book, we've included screen snapshots from the various platforms to highlight the cross-platform capability. About the Author

Mark Harrison has been programming in Tcl ever since he heard John Ousterhout speak at the 1990 Usenix conference.* He currently works in the telecommunications industry for DSC Communications Corporation as a senior system architect, where he is Chief Tcl Evangelist.* In addition, he is enrolled in the computer science department at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Michael J. McLennan is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs Innovations for Lucent Technologies, where he develops software for Computer-Aided Design (CAD). He has been a Tcl/Tk enthusiast since 1992, writing many extensions and applications. He developed the incr Tcl extension, which adds object-oriented facilities to Tcl/Tk. He has also created several Tcl/Tk training courses.

An educational book - not a cookbook

I have been buying books on TK programming (Perl and TCL). and most left me cold, with no real understanding of how TK works. I just followed the examples (most not practical) like a recipe without knowing the why of most steps, meaning I wasn't able to writes my own GUIs for my own specific needs other than by trial and error.

This is the best book I have found, BY FAR.

Just having the pack command explained allowed me to start creating my own applications which came close to what I was aiming for in the first try. The USEFUL examples are explained in detail so that you not only understand how and why they work, but you immediately get ideas for applications you would never have thought of, much less have attempted to write.

If you want to write practical, useful, and impressive GUIs, buy this book now.

I think this is and still is the standard of tcl/tk gui creating books out there. It also can help as most of these same TCL gui's are used in newer languages like perl/python, so learning it here can help down the road. Just a good old reference on TCL/TK. It's an old book, i think written in the Solaris heydays, as there are a lot of unix references, but i think it's still a valid reference.

lots of examples, but not quite what I neede

This would be a good book for an intro course in Tcl. The examples build on each other - so as you work through the book you keep developing the same application into something pretty advanced. It's great if you've got time to work through all the exercises, but I don't think this is a good Tcl reference by itself. The index is not the best and it's hard to find correct syntax for commands. Also, it's definitely not a complete reference. Many commands don't appear or are mentioned only very briefly. For example, creating checkboxes and handling lists. I'm a complete Tcl beginner and I needed to learn some specific things for work. I ended up finding the commands and syntax help I needed online.

The Golden Lotus lays bare the rivalries within this wealthy family while chronicling its rise and fall. It fields a host of vivid characters, each seeking advantage in a corrupt world.

The author of The Golden Lotus is Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng, whose name, a pseudonym, means "Scoffing Scholar of Lanling." His great work, written in the late Ming but set in the Song Dynasty, is a virtuoso collection of voices and vices, mixing in poetry and song and sampling different social registers, from popular ballads to the language of bureaucrats, in order to recreate and comment mordantly on the society of the time.

This edition features a new introduction by Robert Hegel of Washington University, who situates the novel for contemporary readers and explains its greatness as the first single-authored novel in the Chinese tradition. This translation contains the complete, unexpurgated text as translated by Clement Egerton with the assistance of Shu Qingchun, later known as Lao She, one of the most prominent Chinese writers of the twentieth century. The translation has been pinyinized and corrected.

About the Author
Lanling Xiaoxiaosheng wrote The Golden Lotus during the early years of the Wanji era (1573—1620) of the Ming Empire. Nothing certain is known of Lanling's life.

Clement Egerton was at various times a senior officer in the British army, an Anglican bishop, and a writer, editor, linguist, and prolific photographer, but he is best known for his enduring translation of The Golden Lotus.

Shu Qingchun boarded with Clement Egerton and his wife when he was a lecturer in Chinese at the School of Oriental Studies in London, but he became famous as the Beijing novelist and dramatist Lao She, whose best-known work may be Rickshaw Boy. He was killed, or committed suicide, during the Cultural Revolution.

Robert Hegel is the Liselotte Dieckmann Professor of Comparative Literature and a professor of Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Let me start by saying as soon as I finished book one of this series I was opening up book two. I really loved it! I once again lost sleep because of Paige’s books! I’m not complaining about it! It was such an enjoyable read.
Luci and her past teach Josh had an affair that ended badly in book one. After a few years apart, Luci runs into Josh after having to drop something off at school for her younger sister. The spark is still there and you are really rooting for them. Will they get their happily ever after? READ IT so you can find out! You will be happy with this hot love story. When there is a warning like this: This book contains explicit language, sex scenes, and is intended for ages 18 and up. You know it’s going to be a good one after reading that.
This is book two in the Beautiful series and cannot be read as a standalone. It has duel POVs and you hear a lot from Josh, which you didn’t hear his POV in the first book. I believe there is another book coming out but I do not know when and I think it is a novella. I am super exciting about it because I am going to miss Josh and Emily. 5 stars! My advice---redo the covers!

Josh is THE man! Ever had a crush on a teacher and wished for a HEA? Paige brought out so many feelings with this book and I'm really glad I discovered her writing. Minor grammatical errors but this story is solid. What I liked most is this isn't just taboo "smut" nothing wrong with that but sometimes you wanna read a great love story that "happens" to have extremely good sex and that's what this delivers. Great story and characters can't wait to see what you have out next.

ahh what a frustrating read, but the fact I stayed up nearly all night reading it and developing dark bags under my eyes means it must have been good. It's not the same as book 1, so don't expect it to be, but it's just as compelling. The cover isn't the greatest, but this isn't a cover competition.

I have been enjoying the 2016 calendar so much that I jumped for joy when this one arrived the other day. Something different everyday, will it be a puzzle, a recipe, a fun fact? The illustrations are cute and clever and the ideas within are funny and unlike any other calendar I've had. Will be the perfect gift for family and friends this year and I'm already looking forward to January 1, 2017.

Phillips's The Heart of an Executive: Lessons on Leadership from the Life of King David, this book offers a practical application of Buddhist teachings to managing business and life. A Buddhist monk and former diamond district executive, Roach says that the three Buddhist-inspired principles on which he built his success can be applied to other businesses and other circumstances. The principles stipulate that businesses should be profitable, that we should enjoy the money we earn, not working ourselves so hard earning it that we can't enjoy the nice home or relaxing trip it might provide, and that we should be able to claim, when all is said and done, that our years in business were meaningful. "To summarize," writes Roach, "the goal of business, and of ancient Tibetan wisdom... is to enrich ourselves." Roach's uncritical tendency to marry Buddhism and capitalism without so much as a raised eyebrow might give readers pause. (In the end, Roach redeems himself a little by suggesting that the Buddhist teachings of Limitlessness imply that everyone could have enough wealth.) The principles he propounds are appealing, indeed, but they tell us much more about current-day attitudes toward work and money than they do about "ancient Tibetan wisdom." Entrepreneurs seeking solid advice for worldly success may find this book helpful, but those interested in Tibetan Buddhism will likely consider it superficial. (Feb.)

Heartedly recommended

The Diamond Cutter book is very practical and a very special book. I read it a month ago and I can't say now that all of the principals do really work but my gut tells me that it is all true. One of the main ideas in the book is to take 2 or more weeks in solitude and to tackle the biggest challenges in your work and life, away from all the noise in the city and people - just to spend some time alone and listen to your mind. I usually do the most difficult things to feel the main idea, so I took 2 weeks away from work and went it in the mountains all by myself.

Believe it or not, I found answers to all of my challenges in work and in life. It was a very very scary thing and a really painful one; to see the bare naked truth of why I am the way I am and why I can't achieve what I like and desire. The truth was one and simple though. Nevertheless, it was really difficult to listen to my mind becoming louder and louder every day.

Ever since I'm back, I feel my life has been changed even though I am still the same. One small change in me that I can give as an example is that I don't write reviews on Amazon or anywhere else because it takes a lot of time and effort, and why would I bother to do it? Nothing I could gain - that's how I was thinking before. I just read what others have written and then I decide to purchase something here on Amazon or not. After reading The Diamond Cutter and Karmic Management, as you can see, I write reviews because there is something in me that believes now that what goes around comes around. Get the book and do something with it; reading is just reading - nice but take some action, then the change will come inevitably.

Amazing book!!

A friend recommended a book entitled "How Yoga Works" by Geshe Michael Roach. Once I started reading It, I could not put it down. I was so impressed and intrigued by his ideas that I told another friend about it, and she said she had read his book "The Diamond Cutter" and loved it.

As soon as she left my house I downloaded a sample of it onto my Kindle and started reading. Breathless with excitement I then downloaded the whole book and just kept reading all night. I couldn't put it down. My mind was literally blowing ... Almost like flashbulbs going off in my brain. I saw that my financial success can be a direct reflection of my spiritual life. Money by itself does not motivate me, however, I've been broke and I've been rich...and rich is a lot more fun. It also gives me time to meditate and create as well as contribute more to the world.

Get this book! Read it. Then read it again. And start implementing some of the practices. They feel great. Business and commerce is finally making soul sense.

A very important book

This is the best explanation and illustration of karma that I have ever read. Geshe Michael Roach explains, from his experience and understanding of Buddhist wisdom and the teachings of other great teachers, exactly how the effects of our thoughts, actions and words extend into the world and create the conditions we experience.
The real world examples in this book illustrate that the strict moral integrity that is encouraged by all the world's greatest spiritual teachers is important not in the interest of social order or because of obedience, but because it creates the very fabric of our perceived reality. This book is a treasure.
