Alexander S. White is an attorney, writer, and amateur photographer. He is the co-author of David Busch's Canon PowerShot G10/G11 Guide to Digital Photography, and author of PHOTOGRAPHER'S GUIDE TO THE LEICA D-LUX 4: GETTING THE MOST FROM LEICA'S COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA and DAUNTLESS MARINE: JOSEPH SAILER JR., DIVE-BOMBING ACE OF GUADALCANAL. He began his life-long interest in photography as a teenager, when he was fortunate enough to have his own darkroom in his parents' house in Philadelphia. David Busch's Sony Alpha DSLR-A550/A500 Guide to Digital Photography

I am a new to digital user. My last camera was a Minolta Maxxum 5000i, which I have owned of about 35/40 years. One reason I purchase the new Sony was because my other two Minolta lens would work on the new Sony aDSLR-500 body, thinking I would be saving money. And they did work, but they were 40 years behind the digital technology. Santa did bring me a new lens for Christmas, and all is well. I never did learn how to manually use my old camera, so I am starting out from scratch. I have not read this book from cover to cover yet, but so far it has been a great experience. The illustrations are clear and easy to see, and do. David goes through it all, step by step in plain, easy to understand language. I have a series of three other `How to shoot great photos" books that are very good, but the author spent too much time trying to add humor. I like a straight forward, get it done, and let me go shoot some photos type of reading. This book does just that. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a Sony camera, and I would think his other books would be as good.

Having progressed from a Canon film SLR camera, to a Sony digital camera
when they were first introduced, to the Sony A550 I know from a cursory
read of the manual I needed much more to learn how to use this camera to
its full advantages. David Busch's book fits the bill perfectly!!

It explains the features, menus, and scene modes and breaks them down in
easily digestible bites that are fun to read. It is very informative without taking the reader into realms of information overkill that is often done with some manuals.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone that owns either camera, or
someone that just wants to take better digital pictures. Great job David!

The is the second book I have bought from David Busch.

This is the second book I have bought by David Busch. The first was on the Sony a350. Both books have really explained the camera in a much more readable and understandable way than the manuals do.
The information in both books is something that can be used for most all cameras because it goes into Digital photography in an in-depth level that is easy to understand.

Interesting ideas...

I purchased this item because I teach Medical Terminology and other health science courses at the local college and I was curious. The book is well written and the author presents his Memory Palace theory in a way that is accessible to most. It's probably not going to significantly change the way I teach the subject matter but I'm sure some students will find it very helpful. Definitely worth the purchase price, even just to see another interesting way people learn and use information.

Comprehensive system, support materials make the process more easily implementable

I have read several of Mr. Metivier's works. This particular one was the most relevant to the field I work in. I was extremely impressed by the system described (including the extensive details for loci setup that make it immediately apparent that the author knows this system well because he uses it himself). I love memory palaces and used them before reading this and other recent books, but with the purchase of this book, Mr. Metivier offers a daily email newsletter that helps to emphasize his main points and encourages continued use of the system. This has helped greatly in allowing me to continue to implement memory palaces in my daily work. I appreciate the author's excellent customer service also, as I have emailed him and he responded immediately. I highly recommend looking at his work.

This should be named Medical Terminology made Easy. I was having a terrible time with my terminology until I got this book. It broke things down in such a way that even I could grasp it.

Procuring Criminal Justice

John Suthers named his book about the job of a public prosecutor "No Higher Calling, No Greater Responsibility". He may probably be right. That brings into focus the people whose job it is to prosecute crimes. The responsibility and demands of the job requires utmost skill and professionalism in those who are charged with the job. John Bugliosi was an experienced prosecutor when he wrote "The Art of Prosecution". One way in which we can tell if it was a good book is to see if the tone of the book provides an immediate impact. practising one of the methods he preached, Bugliosi's writing style was clear, crisp and without hype. It was clinical, instructional, and inspiring.

It was appropriate that he began by describing the tools that a prosecutor needs for the job, and he describes and explains the qualities needed to be a good prosecutor. He helps inexperience prosecutors in knowing what and how to prepare a case for trial, examples of court room techniques were carefully and aptly chosen. He has a chapter on the 'voir dire", a mini-trial within the trial to determine the admissibility of disputed evidence.

I found his advice on the opening address and closing summation to be wonderfully written. These are the two aspects of a trial that a prosecutor (and defence lawyer) must grasp because everything else that happens in the trial, as Bugliosi explains, depend on how the prosecutor opens and closes his case. This book was written for the jury trial so in the bulk of cases in which the new prosecutor is likely to take to trial are likely to be before a professional and experienced judge sitting without jury. Some of the techniques recommended might not be appropriate without some adjustments. His advice to appeal to the juror's common sense, emotion, and morality, for example, may have to be toned down when a lawyer is addressing a judge less the submission becomes patronising and pedantic; which is a sure way of annoying the judge.

Finally - a book for prosecutors

This is like a how to guide to prove a case. As a prosecutor, this book is a fantastic a resource for advice on case preparation/caseload management.

But in my opinion, where it really shines is teaching trial advocacy for ASA's/ADA's. No longer do you need to scour Trial Ad books -filled with advice for defense attorneys and civil litigators - for a nugget of prosecutorial guidance. This book goes through jury selection to summation giving techniques and examples that are tremendously helpful if you're willing to put the time in. This is a book that you can study for hours at a time, and while it can be dry at times, it's well worth it. I've personally used some of Bugliosi's techniques in trial with great success. This is really the best around if you want to learn how to prove your case and beat the defense.

As a 3rd year assistant prosecutor who works in an office with next to no guidance, this book has become my manual. After using The Art of Prosecution to win my 1st jury trial, I purchased a copy for 3 other APs! It's the prosecutor's version of Thomas Mauet's Trial Advocacy.

Seven Famous Detective Stories

The Complete Novels

This contains the seven famous novels of Raymond Chandler who first wrote short stories for the detective story monthly magazines. Some of his short stories were later expanded to create his novels. They feature his private detective “Philip Marlowe”. These stories are a comment on the life of the wealthy in the 1930s. There were changes in their Hollywood movies so read these to get the original stories.

The Big Sleep.
Philip Marlowe is called to wealthy General Sternwood’s estate to investigate the gambling debts of his youngest daughter. The husband of his older daughter has suddenly disappeared. Is there a connection? The story turns up blackmail, nude photos, drugs, and murder in this family. Do the wealthy have influence on both the law and the mob?

Farewell, My Lovely.
Philip Marlowe is looking for a missing husband. He sees a big man go into “Florian’s” place to look for his old girl friend. There is a fight and a dead body. The police ask Marlowe to look into this case - as a favor. The investigation results in more dead bodies until that old girl friend is discovered. Will this scandal be covered up?

The High Window.
Philip Marlowe is called by a rich widow to recover property stolen by a member of her family. Her son married a nightclub singer against her wishes. The Brasher Doubloon is a very rare gold coin about the size of a half-dollar. Marlowe must find the missing daughter-in-law and also get the rare coin back. The police can’t be involved because it’s a family matter.

The Lady in the Lake.
Philip Marlowe is asked to locate a missing wife who said she was going for a divorce. He goes to a vacation home by this lake in the mountains. He inspects her last known location. Another wife also went missing. A body is found in the lake! He learns the wife’s old boyfriend is also dead. Was there some scandal that involved a doctor’s nurse? The lack of survivors means no story for the newspapers.

The Little Sister.
Philip Marlowe is asked to find a missing brother who moved from Kansas. He visits the last known address. Then people are found murdered. Marlowe finds a claim check for photographs. The investigation continues until the secret it revealed in the last pages. Can a snapshot of a couple lead to murders?

The Long Goodbye.

Great Book for Any Church Leader

As a leader of Women's Ministries in my church, I needed a training book to encourage and teach the Women's Ministry Board. The principles stated in this book are very important to ministry at any level. It involves the personal and spiritual disciplines important to setting the right model of leadership. Our ladies team has enjoyed the study of this book and find if helpful. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the principles of leadership.

Great Leadership from a great man!

Having served in the Marine Corp, Eims knows leadership first hand. And he knows his Bible, too. His delineating of the principles 1) single-mindedness 2) whole-heartedness and 3) a fighting-spirit are brilliant. This guy knows what it takes to step out front and lead the pack.

Eims doesn't beat around the bush. He tells you straight-out that your relationship with God is foundational to success as a leader. It's this fellowship with Him that "flips the switch" and turns everything on.

Get this book, read it, mark it up and then get into God's Word. You'll see these principles all over the pages of Holy Writ. Become the leader God intended you to be!

Excellet! I highly recommend this book

As I have served in leadership for years in various church setting and secluar settings, I have learned some lessons the hard way. Part of that is simply the maturing process as we grow in faith. However, this book echos so many of the lessons I have learned! It is refreshing to see it written from a very real perspective (not just pie in the sky theories) with real life illustrations as well as solid Biblical support. A refreshing and easy to read book that I personally plan to purchase more of for individuals who serve in my leadership circle - especially those who are the "up and coming" leaders who are eager to learn and grow in their gift and calling to the glory of God.

Good book for learning overall aspects of Oscillator Design

I would rated at 3.5 stars. It is very informative and I really like Rhea's delivery. I own the his previous two books (Oscillator Design & Computer Simulation, and HF Filter Design and Computer Simulation). Those have some good examples but also are written more as companion books to Genesys. This one is much less removed from Genesys, so in that sense it truly stands on its own. But the examples, although numerous, are pretty light in explanation. The material is truly a compendium of various topics, and in doing so it is quite well put together; but the examples (in my opinion) should provide a bit more depth to describe more of the steps taken to create the designs (and perhaps some of the reasoning behind it). I have found on examples on this (and the other books) that some of the examples are not easily reproducible on other systems (ex. AWR or LINC). I presume that downloading the Genesys example files should reproduce the results quite adequately, but most of the examples should be reproducible on other systems and I have found that is not always the case. All in all I would buy it again.

Excellent book on discrete oscillator design using computer simulation

This is a book written from a very practical approach to designing discrete oscillators by someone who seems to have practical experience in building the hardware too. It is not laden with heavy theory like most textbooks, but employ computer simulations to quickly get an intuitive engineering understanding of how oscillator works. If you search on Google under "genesys oscillator workspace download", you can download the actual simulation files used in the writing of the book. If you don't have a book on oscillator design, maybe you can start with this one.
