Another music book I can't be without

When I took up jazz piano five years ago, the The Real Book - Volume I - Sixth Edition - C Edition - CD-ROM Sheet Music was, of necessity, one of the first books I purchased. I started working through the old standards, new classics, ballads, bops, and blues, and although I'd only scratched the surface of learning the songs and building my repertoire, I wanted more. After buying the The Real Book - Volume II (C Instruments): C Instruments 2nd Edition (Fake Book), I was happy again to be working on another cadre of tunes and broadening my repertoire even further. It was about at that point when I would hear something at a concert or on the radio, that I would think, man I'd like to be able to play that, but couldn't find it in the 800 some songs in my two books. Well, maybe if I buy Volume 3 (I thought), it will have those tunes in it, and as before, Hal Leonard The Real Book Volume III - Second Edition - CD-ROM gave me a lot of new material to work on. Not long after that, Hal Leonard The Real Book - Volume IV (C Edition) came out, with a lot of the Mancini and Gershwin tunes missing from the first three volumes, so I bought that, too, just to keep pace with what was available (since I was still working on the Volume 3 tunes I liked). But when Hal Leonard promised a fifth volume, I pre-ordered right after I saw the song list, as I could tell it had quite a few songs I was eager to play. Now, after two delays in printing, that book is in my hot little piano-playing hands, and I can say: I'm delighted.
First of all, like the previous four volumes, this is another 400 songs that do not appear in any of the previous volumes. (I used my database of the first four volumes and added the song list of this book from the Hal Leonard website - after checking its contents against the book - and found only two duplications. There were four other duplications in previous volumes for a grand total of six duplications across the five books.) And I will be the first to admit that, with five books covering 2,000 some songs, there is no possible way I will ever get to the point of playing them all. No loss, however, as the price is low enough that even if I only play 40 or 50 songs from this volume, I'm still only paying a few dimes per song. Because so much of the jazz oeuvre has appeared in the earlier volumes, volume 5 is heavy on standards from contemporary popular music, like Every Breath You Take, Billie Jean, Piano Man, and music and themes from James Bond and Disney films. Where volume 5 excels, however, is its inclusion of "standard" standards that have been noticeably missing from previous volumes, such as I Get a Kick Out of You, Mack the Knife, Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, One O'clock Jump and The Lamp is Low. (Unfortunately, one favorite that was scheduled for release in the volume, Tin Tin Deo, didn't make the final cut.) The paper is the usual high quality, the printing is crisp and clean in the familiar jazz font, and the binding is the durable but easy to use plastic comb. I like the bright green cover, which is eye-catching on the music stand. It's a distinctive addition to my burgeoning music book collection.
This is another great book for any jazz performer or enthusiast to pick up for their library. If you own the other four, like I do, adding this one will make it pretty hard for your audience to shout out a request you can't fulfill.
ADDITIONS AND CORRECTION: I rechecked the official song lists and found a total of five duplicates in Volume 5, and nine duplicates overall across the five volumes. It should be noted, however, that of the nine "duplicates", only one is an exact duplicate that has a different layout. Seven of the other "duplicates" have different chord changes, or different notation, or added or enhanced parts. One "duplicate" is two completely different songs with the same title (Time Was). Note that the song lists used are from the table of contents of the volumes with links provided in the review. The duplicates, volumes they appear in, and noted differences I found are:
(Love is) The Tender Trap (Volume 3 and 5, some differences)
A Dreamer's Holiday (3 and 5, exactly the same, layout different)
And All That Jazz (4 and 5, significant differences)
Born to Be Blue (3 and 4, some differences)
Humpty Dumpty (2 and 4, some differences)
On the Sunny Side of the Street (2 and 3, some differences)
Taking a Chance on Love (4 and 5, some differences)
Time Was (3 and 5, two completely different songs)
You're Nobody `til Somebody Loves You (1 and 2, different chord changes)

A Boatload of Missing Gems

I own the first four volumes of the new edition Real Book series which together, contain nearly 2000 charts. However, many important, popular or great tunes are missing (arrrgh). Real Book Volume V contains many of these missing charts, some pleasant surprises and some especially difficult to find but often requested gems.
In my opinion, this is the best Real Book compilation since Volume I. All the charts I've tried are spot on accurate.

Great tune selection

After being very disappointed with Vol 3 and 4 both, Volume 5 is terrific in terms of variety of music, and tunes that are really popular for all ages. Not just older Jazz standards, but 60's 70's and 80's pop that Jazz players will have fun with. If I were only able to buy 1 Real Book , this would be it.
